like, I enjoyed it at first, but after getting whooped multiple times, I was getting to be discouraged.

now I'm just exploring the area after the boat reaches the second area (the game's world is huge), and I'm having a good time.

I keep getting my ass kicked, though. maybe I'm not playing that well, maybe I'm underleveled, maybe both.

I'm at the cemetery, btw.

same, especially since the main characters have interesting traits and/or storylines

I went with Lohse since she has that demon thing going on, the one mercenary guy who can talk to animals, the Red Prince, and Fane (since he can pickpocket with his fingers, and his masks give him the special traits of each race).

and I looked up tips to best play them.

No shame in knocking the difficulty down a notch to learn and enjoy, heavy difficulty isn't fun for everyone. I like turn based games like this, and X-COM, but i'm not great at them and usually start on a low difficulty until I learn how to play better.

It's a fun game and worth completing.

It's only difficult because it can be tricky to grind exp and level up... there aren't random monsters roaming about that you can just fight over and over, as you're probably already seeing... each fight typically has long lasting consequences.

But all that makes the game better because it makes each fight matter.

It's really, really good. I was intimidated at first due to the size of it, but I caught on faster than I thought I would and it became my addiction for months.

I'm not playing at the easiest difficulty, but the next one that's apparently for people more familiar with the genre

it can be, and I feel like I'm doing a lot wrong, but having a balanced crew has helped a lot.

yea, that's how I feel. in other games, I usually feel bad about being a dick, and I do in this one as well, but it pays off, lol.

but I try not to be; only against the magisters.

same. the exploration has paid off, but I end up having a difficult time with some of the fights the further away I get from the starting town

well, I'm still on the second island, and I'm winning as many fights as I'm losing, but then there are some fights where the narrator is like, "the enemy is a lot stronger than you are, so you should run away (I think I'm at level 10 or 11)"

I'll probably just stick with the story related quests for now.

I'm about to head to the dude Gareth's family home, or something like that

Nice!

I have never once played with a party in that game, but I have a mod that brings back the original, better Lone Wolf perks. And I also have a lot more skills and classes thanks to mods

I went the other way, started off liking it a lot but my interest waned and I didn't finish it, got through a bit of the second world before I quit.

The movement speed in that game is inexcusable btw

yea, I'll probably try out lone wolf in a subsequent playthrough. right now, I want to get to learn more about the crew I'm running with.

and I'm playing the PS4 version, so it'll likely be a different experience without mods.

I don't really play turn-based RPGs anymore, especially CRPGs, so I kinda chalked up the speed as just being one of those things.

but yea, something just clicked for me during the second area. I just started buying/crafting all of the different skill books I could, and experimented until I found the combination that I liked the most.

It's the perfect RPG as far as I'm concerned.

Had doubts about the armor system early on but had to admit they were on to something eventually. Good stuff. Very tactical.

tbh, I've just been using the armor with the highest defense, unless if it added something I cared about to my stats.

And there is a mod to fix that

This is why I do think PC is the best way to play a lot of games. We can just make the games better

I actually haven't had a chance to play Enhanced Edition but Summoners were top notch in vanilla, try it if you haven't.

I started the game last night. Took forever to create a character and I did the small tutorial before you go up the ladder. Think I'm going to scrap current character and start over now that I have a feel for combat.

I really do love how detailed it all is.

For a first playthrough should I use one of the premade characters or a custom character?

pre-made characters have quests and back stories attached to them, so I think it's better to start with them

have you played the first one? i just played it earlier this year and it had enjoyable combat and character progression, but overall i was kind of underwhelmed. especially with the extremely generic and trope-filled story. i've heard the second one is way better though.

nah, this is my first DoS. the story is pretty interesting so far, but the gameplay is the appeal, for me, and I generally don't even like turn-based games.

I agree. I only really kill magisters when it's convenient/they're in the way.

you can fight and even legitimately defeat Dallis the first time you see her IIRC and what the game does if you do is fantastic

It does turn based really well. It's just too much for me and I can't manage to stay invested for long enough.

It takes some real effort to get back into things at the end of each act/location.

It was roughly around the time I left the tutorial island that I felt like I fucked up with messing around with the preset characters. Like, I'd give the dude that's obviously supposed to be a ranger or whatever the warrior class, the Red Prince became a ranger, etc.

I ended up just starting all over and not changing a thing about the premade characters.

and levels in this game are no joke. I went to an area I wasn't ready for, and the dudes were two-shotting people in my party.
