The r word of course being slang for "mentally handicapped" in the form an insult.

I noticed that lately it's becoming a taboo word to use as an insult. Similar to the word "gay."

What are your thoughts on this?

I can't recall using it in a long, long time.

It's been that way since the 90's

But tbqh I think it should be okay now since no one in 2019 actually uses that word to describe a legit disability. It used to be the official term, which is why it was offensive to use as an insult

I don't find it offensive I just don't use it since hurts many people in a different way stupid/idiot does.

No, but I really should.

This isn't my original thought, but if you think about it, kids will be punished in school for using the N word or the F word (slur for gay people), but for the R word, will usually receive a "Don't say that" at the very worst. It's sad if you think about it, because you have such a small chance of getting any backlash from the actual group of people that is at the butt end of that word. Hurt feelings perhaps, but no backlash.

It's always annoying trying to find alternatives to these words when they fall from favor. Not that that's a good excuse to keep saying them, but I do kinda miss those connotations I can't express easily anymore. Dumb, lame, etc don't really have the same meaning.

in the netherlands there are in addition to gay and f word a lot of dutch counterparts to those words and people still use it. and not always used as slurs sometimes u say it to ur friend.

not oldies though for the most part

I have not.

(I've mentioned this before) My sister was severely mentally impaired and for all 35 years of her life us, the doctors, her teachers, her therapists, everybody called her mentally "r" word. Not in a derogatory way or anything but that's simply what it was.
The very definition: delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment. That's what she was.

I also won't remove it from my vocabulary. Now, when I was young I learned not to use that in a bad way against people and have not done that.
