He's just there just so they can say William Dafoe is Ryuk >_> He adds nothing to the plot after he gives the Death Note to Light -L turns into this emotional baby halfway through and literally reveals his face to Light for no reason when he had everything to lose doing it >_> -Also, the orphanage subplot for L came out of nowhere and literally leads to nothing anyway so it feels like a waste of screentime. -There's over the top gore in a bunch of scenes just to be edgy when the original rarely ever showed any gore at all. -Light acts like a dumbass most of the film and then magically pulls out this 2000IQ stunt at the end which feels completely out of character to what he has shown for 90% of the movie.
