I remember buying a Gameshark for the GBA to get all 3 starters in Pokemon Emerald and then it broke the 2nd day. I didn't even drop it or anything. Probably the worst $20 I've ever spent.

I remember getting the OG Game Genie for Christmas one year

Also had some great times on the N64 with one of those devices because you could add more moves to WWF No Mercy and WrestleMania 2000

I believe the speedrunning community does still employ them to an extent for odds and ends. Mainly the people who fuck around with the games - the routers, etc.
