Skye Reynolds 07/07/19 2:32:26 PM #52:	My biggest gripe with the original is the revenge cuckolding that takes place. Li Shang's father is killed and he swears revenge. But never mind that. Mulan found the doll of a little girl that was killed (and probably assaulted), so Shan Yu is her adversary to defeat. After all, she's in the movie's title. I hate that in movies. If the hero is to defeat the villain, as is normal, the hero should be the one who has the greatest motivation to defeat the bad guy. Don't just have the hero sweep in and take over someone else's revenge narrative. That's why I'm in full support of leaving out Li Shang. Despite being Mulan's film, the movie was really more about the male supporting characters than it was her. Eddie Murphy's Mushu was the most memorable character and the story followed Li Shang more than it did Mulan. This film corrects that. I do think it's silly that she doesn't appear to be trying to hide her sex -- as was the core of the original story -- but that seldom if ever translates well into live action anyway. We pretend that a girl is a boy because she wears her hair short or puts on a baseball cap. It never works. I can't speak for anyone else.
