I dunno the exact numbers here but we opened a new branch at work so once in a while I have to visit the branches and have been experimenting on finding the best route, they are basically all roads out in the middle of the country, and Ive come across a bunch of random little churches just sitting there alone surrounded by fields. Just seems weird enough people would even know about them to keep them going.

Yeah there are a lot of those around me, though not technically in my city.

It's weird driving down a country road, with nothing around, then all of a sudden a church.
I guess it probably made more sense before people had cars.

In all seriousness though, who founds churches? Does someone just decide ya know what? Theres too many damn people crammed into these few churches here, we need a new one! or what?

Live in the south? Down here you could be teleported to any random area and you'd still be within spitting distance of a church.

I have a cottage in a beach town off lake Huron and there is a church snack dab in the middle of it.

It's mostly a summer party town and even had a show on MTV for like a season trying to mimic jersey shore but it bombed... think it was called Grand Benders or something.

Anyways, police and bylaw enforcement are all over the place during the summer since people party all night long in certain areas right off the strip but it's full of cottages and old people or people with young kids also stay/live there so by there is NO time limit for when someone can call in excessive noise complaints.

Knowing this one Sunday morning when the church had its Sunday choir outside I called bylaw enforcement and the cops had to tell them to stop singing outside. Who wants to hear people sing ridiculous hymns at 10am on a Sunday OVER giant speakers and microphones when cottages like 20 feet away have have sleeping hungover people.

Different sects and different denominations make up a lot of it.

And you didn't want to make people have to go very far to go to church.

Like for example there's a Russian Orthodox Church not far from where I went to High School. There's also two massive Ukrainian Orthodox cathedrals a number of blocks away in different directions (and numerous churches). Those are both part of the Eastern Orthodox Church but of course different. There's also a few Greek Orthodox churches, also part of Eastern Orthodox. There's also a Serbian one, and a couple Romanian ones.

Of course we also get into Oriental Orthodoxy. We have two Eritrean Orthodox churches, two Ethiopian ones, a Coptic one, and a Syriac one.

And of course there's others that exist that we don't have. Like for example, the Armenian Apostolic Church is part of the Oriental Orthodoxy.

E: And also of course I didn't even touch on say, all the Anglican churches or Roman Catholic churches and also doesn't even include all the other religions.
