Who will be in the G1 Climax this year?
Here's a short round-up of the entire field. First off A Block: Kazuchika Okada is the current IWGP Heavyweight Champion who recently regained the title after losing it in June last year. That reign saw him set a record in days holding the title with 720 and consecutive title defenses with 12. It is also in my opinion the greatest title reign of all time in any promotion, as every defense is of the highest quality. Nevertheless, even outstanding champions will take pinfall losses in this tournament. Okada is also the leader of the CHAOS faction and won the G1 before in 2012 and 2014. Zack Sabre Jr. is the Submission Master based on his traditional catch-wrestling style filled with all sorts of painful holds. He is the current Revolution Pro Wrestling British Heavyweight Champion. In NJPW he plays the role of second in command of Suzuki-Gun and will probably perform the best among their ranks, as Suzuki himself is not in this year's field. Hiroshi Tanahashi is the Ace of New Japan and though now in his early fourties still revered as a demigod in the company as he held the flag high when the company was in dire straits through the mid and late 2000s. In particularly his feud with Okada is legendary. Tanahashi won the G1 Climax in 2007, 2015, and last year in a breathtaking final against... Kota Ibushi, a wonderfully eccentric wrestler who is capable of both ridiculous flips and hard strikes. For a long time he refused to sign long-term with companies, but finally let himself tie down with New Japan in order to capture the IWGP Heavyweight title. He is also notorious for taking very scary bumps on his neck. The man simply known as EVIL walks to the ring with a hooded robe and a gigantic scythe. The resident bruiser of Los Ingobernables de Japon has a tough style. He has held the NEVER Openweight Championship before, but is more notable as a tag-team wrestler with his partner... SANADA, an incredibly talented wrestler who was trained in the AJPW system by Keiji Mutoh. He has morphed through a couple of gimmicks now, originally portraying a street-tough he now wears pirate-themed attire. While not crowned with singles-gold yet, he has challenged for the IWGP Heavyweight championship twice and was a finalist in the New Japan Cup earlier this year. Bad Luck Fale is a house of a man. The bruiser of Bullet Club will most likely serve as the "bye week" as his matches are usually short and end in a disqualification. Nevertheless, he can also serve as a spoiler, particularly to Okada whom he has beaten twice in G1s. Lance Archer is a menacing, towering Texan who brutalizes his opponents. A member of Suzuki-gun he is more known as a tag-team wrestler with the recently defunct Killer Elite Squad. Will Ospreay, the Aerial Assassin, is the current IWGP Junior Heavyweight champion. It is rare for juniors to participate in the G1, but Ospreay has set out to prove that weight does not matter in wrestling. He has a high-flying and exciting style with multiple potential finishers. I tried to avoid comparisons to WWE in this post, but with KENTA it is all but impossible. The former Hideo Itami was severely hampered in his exploits in the west due to injuries, but he still retains near-legendary status in Japan, though that glory was earned in NJPW's rival promotion Pro Wrestling NOAH. However, these setbacks also mean that he has something left to prove. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

And in B Block we find:
Tetsuya Naito, the boss of Los Ingobernables de Japon has a tranquilo attitude that is betrayed with his frantic in-ring style. He was originally supposed to be the next great babyface of the company, but the audience turned on him, so he turned on the audience, which ironically made him all the more popular. He won the G1 in 2013 and 2017 and could very well do it again. He is also the current IWGP Intercontinental Champion. Tomohiro Ishii is the Stone Pitbull known for his unwavering attitude and hard-hitting chops. A member of CHAOS, he neither possesses a neck nor the willingness to give up. He enters the tournament holding the NEVER Openweight Championship. Juice Robinson recently willingly lost his hair and unwillingly the IWGP United States Championship in a fantastic match against Jon Moxley. While he definitely wants revenge, he will also certainly try to entertain the crowd with his persistent and joyful attitude. However, people are also prophesying an imminent heel turn. Toru Yano is never shy to use dirty tactics. Those tactics also primarily go into the comedic, trying to play his opponents for fools. While the matches of CHAOS's resident DVD producer are short and will serve as a "bye week" for B Block, his opponents will still have to take heed as he is known to steal a victory here and there. Hirooki Goto embodies the samurai spirit as no other. The member of CHAOS he is known for his hard strikes and stoic attitude. He has several title reigns with the Intercontinental and NEVER Openweight championship, as well as three New Japan Cup and one G1 Climax win under his belt, but never managed to capture the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Jay White is the leader of Bullet Club and held the IWGP Heavyweight Championship earlier this year. This is only his second G1 climax tournament, but he already made big waves last year. He could very well win the block or even the whole tournament this year. Jeff Cobb will fill the role of the babyface giant this year. The former Olympian and NEVER Openweight Champion has a large frame, but also a very athletic style that you wouldn't expect from a man of his build. Shingo Takagi is the listed as a junior heavyweight but certainly packs heavyweight power. After spending most of his career in the Dragon Gate promotion, he joined NJPW and the Los Ingobernables de Japon stable last October and was not pinned or submitted until the final match of the Best of the Super Junior tournament in early June. Taichi is a former junior heavyweight, transitioning to heavyweights recently. He is either revered or despised with no opinions in between. A dastardly heel and multiple-time NEVER Openweight champion, he regularly employs underhanded tactics but has yet to make use of the Iron Claw he inherited from Takashi Iizuka. And last but not least Jon Moxley. Like with KENTA, you can't really get around the elephant in the room here. Finally free of the shackles of a controlling creative department, the former Dean Ambrose has recaptured his joy for wrestling, and also captured the IWGP United States Championship in his debut match for New Japan. He has also taken a liking putting NJPW's trainees, called young lions, through the wringer. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Man it so annoys me I don't get AXS. This looks like a great opening card for g1. It is a really good idea by NJPW to put Okada/Tanahashi on the US card. Let the new fans see what they are all about.

Wait, so this isn't going to be on NJPW World? What about for on demand?
Also, I've only loosely been following NJPW the past couple of years, just not enough time in the week to keep up with everything. What does the winner of the G1 Climax tournament get? And if tonight is the start of the tournament, what has been the other G1 events happening in the past few weeks/months (or am I wrong on that)? And how does the tournament work with A block B block (I don't really know much about sports tournaments other than just having one bracket). Edit: Is it whoever gets the most wins in A block, and then whoever gets the most wins in B block? --- http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111123223446/simpsons/images/9/99/K.png I didn't even give you my coat! ... @AlCalavicci
It will be up on Demand latter, but I don't know when. As BS as it is, it's for a good reason. They need views on AXS But to answer you question, they get a Championship shot at WrestleKingdom in January, which is their WrestleMania * You wrestle everyone in your Block once * 2 Points for a W, 1 Point for a draw, 0 points when you lose * Most points in each Block faces each other in the finales * Ties are broken by who won the single match * The IWGP Champ [Okada] is in this. If he wins, he picks his opponent There are other champions here as well - Moxly, Osprey and Ishii are all champions. If they lose to anyone, they will defend their title against that person at a latter date. The winner of the G1 will also defend against people that beat him during it. This ends the year with logical story lines leading into January's WrestleKingdom --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Thanks for the explanation, I like how they're doing that. Wasn't sure if it was a build up straight to WK or not since WK is still several months away.
I don't have AXS and wouldn't be able to watch it live tonight anyway, so hopefully I can check it out on NJPW World soon. --- http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111123223446/simpsons/images/9/99/K.png I didn't even give you my coat! ... Copied to Clipboard!
