Its more that people are upset that redheads are being replaced.

Annie
Jimmy Olsen
Starfire
Mary-Jane Watson
Ariel

All of them have been replaces by someone not a redhead which leads some to think Hollywood hates gingers/redheads.

People change their hair color all the time to fit other parts. You can't tastefully and non awkwardly change the color of your skin to fit rolls. These things are not the same.

"Oh no, this role was played originally by a blonde, but Im a brunette. What ever will I do?!"

@Lost_All_Senses

They could just cast an actual redhead for these iconic roles that are literally some of the most popular redheads instead of changing it for shitty reasons.

It seems just to be more inclusive to other races for Mary-Jane, and Ariel.

I have no issues with casting a person that can sing but it does seem like redheads/gingers are being given the boot by Hollywood.

Starfire was a redhead but there is no reason they could not make her orange, Gamora in MCU was green.

So you'd be just as upset if they cast...I don't know Gal Gadot or Chloe Grace Moretz to play Ariel? would you be going on about this in the same way?

The person atleast needs to have red hair, the woman they cast did dye her hair which makes it fine to me.

I was simply making the point that hollywood seems to be against natural gingers/redheads.

Funny enough, Gal Gadot got a ton of shit for being cast as Wonder Woman. Likewise, Jessie Eisenberg got shit on instantly for being cast as Lex. And pretty much every person ever cast as the Joker received backlash when cast(at least at first). I don't give a fuck about the Ariel situation myself but lets not pretend like it's *all* about race because it really fucking isn't.

Will Smith as genie didn't get much ire other than people were afraid he wasn't gonna be blue.

But no one cared that he replaced a redhaired voice actor.

Then again, he is Will Smith.

I've yet to see anyone complain about the new Ariel's acting, singing, or saying she can't play this role...all i've seen is "ARIEL IS WHITE AND REDHEAD AND SHE ISN'T!"...So, so far....at least from the arguments i've seen against her here, it has been about her race or natural hair color. The ones you named were at least people who were concerned that they wouldn't be able to play that character, again, I've yet to see anyone go that route with regard to Halle.

What about just being respectful of the source material? If a character is white, black, Asian, blue, green, or whatever originally then aim to be as accurate as can be with any deviation being an error to be corrected.

It is as long as the persons race or ethnicity isnt crucial to the plot or theme of the movie. If they remade Roots you wouldnt cast Michael Cera as the lead. But if they remade I Am Legend feel free to cast a white actor in the same role will smith played. Im not gonna whine and say omg the most recent movie that i remember had a black lead played by will smith. If the actor playing the new lead doesnt look exactly like will smith Im gonna riot! That shit is stupid.

People didn't complain about Gal because "she coudn't play the character". Gal got shit on because she wasn't buff enough. That's a purely superficial reason to be against someone's casting. Or, I don't know if you remember this, but when Henry Cavill was cast some people were mad because he was British and not American. Fuck, even Hugh Jackman got backlash for being too tall for Wolverine. The point being, you're just wrong when you act like people only complain over race swaps.

What about Asian Shaft? Indian Shaft? Pacific Islander Shaft? Latino Shaft?

Why can't they hire an actor for every other Ethnicity / Skin Color play the exact same role that Samuel Jackson made famous?

You don't get it dude. A lot of people(I'm not going to say all because there certainly are racists out there) aren't unhappy about the Ariel change because "Eww black people" or whatever but because Ariel is classic character that they grew up loving and they want her appearance to stay consistent. I, for example, have been a big fan of Blade since the Spider-Man cartoon. Now Blade isn't T'Challa or something. He doesn't *need* to be black. But that's how I want Blade to look because that's what Blade looks like in my head. It's not really that hard to understand why people care about topic on levels less evil then "RAWR RACISM".

i didn't say it was racism. you said "its not only about race"...but in this case, it is about her race. They're upset because the character they grew up with is a different race than what they grew up with. I'm saying that's a dumb reason to be upset.

Ask most young folks who played "Shaft"

most people will remember "Samuel Jackson".

Nobody in the modern era will remember "Richard Roundtree"

The key word here is Disney. If it were a different movie studio doing their own version of The Little Mermaid and they cast Halle Bailey, nobody would have had an issue, as its not Disneys The Little Mermaid. Disneys The Little Mermaid has an iconic appearance which should be respected and acknowledged.

Ask people who played Sherlock Holmes and they're going to say Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr and they didn't make that role famous either.

It's actually hilarious how often people bring up Shaft in these conversations. It kinda shows that there really aren't that many African-American properties to choose from to argue their point. It was a 70's TV show that got a 90's movie. So we're basically talking Get Smart level. That's the straws that are being clutched.

And for me, it'll be "Jonny Lee Miller" from Elementary.

But people base their choices on who they remember portraying said characters.

It's like who people remember as "James Bond".

Everybody has their "Bond".

James Bond is like the Doctor from Doctor Who. He has no single iconic appearance, and being played by very different actors is just normal for those two series.
