*wall of text warning*

Basically he insisted that I put two pats of butter in his hot coffee. I politely said I couldn't due to state and corporate health code policies. The man had a complete meltdown and demanded my name and the phone number of my manager. I complied and even gave him a $5 gift card.

When I came back out with my manager's business card, he was holding his phone somewhat inconspicuously towards me. My coworker said he was recording. I walked away swiftly and he put his phone away. He eventually stormed out after screaming at me some more.

I feel like I handled myself appropriately, although naturally I'm quite upset about the situation. He even said I was being spiteful and rude because I didn't laugh at his joke earlier. I'm not at fault here, right? I wasn't about to break a health code violation just to meet this awful customer's unreasonable demand.

As a side-note: Maybe I was wrong to assume, but the man seemed perfectly capable physically of putting the butter in himself. He claimed his hands were dirty - but we have a bathroom in our store right around the corner. I really don't see why he needed me to do it for him.

Gotta love retail, right?

Any customer that records retail workers deserves to have their phone chucked into a lake and they have to buy their bitch ass self a new phone. Fuck that.

Just don't ask TC to do it for you or he'll get spiteful and rude.

YEah me too. I'm not a coffee drinker and I've never heard of butter in coffee but what rules say you can't do that? You're already a food prep area making the coffee.

It's always been a thing, as far as I'm aware. I've talked to managers about it. It's about eliminating potential hand contact with the butter, which is more difficult to do when compared with packaged food; it's always been policy to hand it out on the side.

We have special gift cards straight from corporate that allow us to load a specific amount of money to hand out to angry customers. Quick way to appease them.

Which you shouldn't be doing. It's rules like that make them feel like they can bitch and complain about anything. Just like most of these people are so stupid that they actually believe that the customer is always right.

Not TC's fault about the gift card situation, a lot of companies have these ass backward contingency plans to reward bad customer behaviour, and demand employees use them.

I can understand just wanting to get them to go away quickly by doing that, but I just couldn't do it. I wouldn't want to teach them that being a jackass gets you a reward.

Coffee shop. I've just always lumped food service with retail. Especially since we sell retail products as well.

I didn't think it was that big of deal. People always ask for it on the side, anyway. I suppose someone angry enough like that customer could go to corporate about it, and if they change that policy, I'd be more than happy to oblige. Just trying to do my job.

Butter in coffee? Sounds disgusting but how exactly does that violate against a health code? Could you just not have given the guy a butter packet or something?
