I understood the plot of Kingdom Hearts 1.

But I was just letting stuff happen in KH2 and rolling with it.

KH2's plot is easy, even without playing Chain of Memories first.

There's Nobodies. You fight the bad guys. Computers have worlds in them. Darkness is evil.

I mean the basic story is pretry easy to understand if you don't fret the details. The details did take me a few playthroughs though.

For example, I didn't piece together that Tron world was a hint about Roxas/Twilight Town until like my fifth playthrough, and they really could have been a lot more clear about the whole "nothingness" thing.

Apart from the fact that both those datascapes were created by the same guy, I don't recall there being any other hints towards each other.

It doesnt really make sense until later games when they fully explain wtf Roxas and Namine are. Then in even later games it gets more confusing again because there's a lot of extra info about Organization XIII.

They explain what Roxas and Namine are in KH2 itself. There's nothing more to them.

DDD adds more details to Nobodies in general, but that's about it.

They're literally just nobodies at that point. No explanation of why they're special.

What makes Namine special is explained in the KH2 journal. She's never really talked about again for the rest of the series, outside of references or her data version in Re:coded.

I'm guessing you're talking about the Ventus thing with Roxas. But that's not really what made Roxas special, it just explained why he looked like that (which wasn't even smthng we needed to know since KH2 said Nobodies have physical differences from their original bodies anyway). Roxas was only special cuz Sora was still alive, and that was talked about in both CoM and KH2.

KH2 is light nonsense (by Nomura standards) but I really don't mind a story not making much sense if the emotional reactions I have to it feel earned and real, and Kingdom Hearts 2 is an epic emotional rollercoaster.

That was ruined by KH3

It is but also it's like a 50 hour game so I don't fault people who pay attention and still forget important details by the time they finish the story a month or so after they start.

KH2 is a little difficult to understand when going from 1 to 2.

Nowadays, KH2 is super difficult to understand because BBS, DDD, and 3 retroactively added details that made 2 way more complex than it originally was.

Random question from somebody who only played 1 - is the very first boss ever mentioned again? The silent large shadow that appears on the island to start the series of events? Iirc his hands were stuck in the sand, you had to attack when he lifted them. For some reason I always thought he was being compelled into attacking, unlike the other bosses that all taunted/had their own motivations...

To me, it's not that KH is hard to understand. It's just the constant twists, convolution and retconning make me gradually care less and less until my interest in the series completely bottomed out. Even just the big bad's identity changing so many times is enough to make me tune out:

KH1: 'Oh, so it was the Butler all along! I mean, he did kind of come out of nowhere after we've been antagonized by the Dowager the entire game, and he was only ever mentioned in ancillary texts, but okay, the Butler did it.'

KH2: 'So if I'm understanding this correct, it was the Chambermaid all along, who stole the Butler's identity for some reason! But it's not really the Chambermaid, just the Chambermaid's soulless animated husk-clone who was running around in the background while we were defeating the Chambermaid in the guise of the Butler in the first game. And the real Butler's a good guy. And I guess the Dowager's still farting around somewhere.'

Somewhere in Those Apparently-Essential Handheld Games: 'Okay, lemme see here...it was actually, honestly, the Kindly Old Groundskeeper all along, who possessed the Chambermaid to make himself young again, and then digital clones and time travel and fuck it I'm out.'

I honestly couldn't care if it turned out Nomura's had every single plot point mapped out for the past two decades: the fact that the series feels very much like they're making shit up as they go kills my investment.

Even in-universe, it felt like none of the characters had a full grasp of the plot.

The only one who knew what was going on was Xehanort, and he had to resort to creating plothole after plothole to make things work out for him.

Like, it's not the exact same one from KH1 since it's a species, if that's what youre asking.

But there is a boss fight against one in Chain of Memories, Days, Re:coded, 0.2BbS, and KH3. And a group of them appear in a cutscene in Birth by Sleep.

Ahh thanks for the clarification - I was hoping they'd develop the individual boss character as I don't remember learning much about him in KH1

Welcome to KH.

It's BS but that's the way it is, and that's more or less the point of Nobodies as a plot device.
