I just watched the movie "Us" and the characters all use white voice. (We all know what it is without me having to say it, right?)

Anyway, I didn't understand why they were doing it, and it kind of took me out of the atmosphere of the movie; mostly because it was like I could see them acting the whole time, which is never good...

(The movie itself was okay, so I don't have any real complaints about it, other than the acting.)

I mean, I've heard people say wannabes aren't racist, so I guess that would mean white voice isn't racist?

I'm just curious what everyone else thinks.

And it's not something people want to do. I was a supervisor in a call center and you dont understand the amount of complaints I took that were along the lines of I couldnt understand their name, they sounded like they were out of the country, they were foreign, etc

And our company was all US based. So it was people who's names were middle eastern or Mexican and they were calling themselves Joe or something.

I wouldn't call it racist but more of an effect of racism

Context matters
When it's done like Dave Chappelle does it, it's racist or at least racial because it's specifically mocking white people. When it's the Banks children from Fresh Prince then it's not. It's more mimicking rich people in that context.

Also, I personally find both of those instances funny but I can see someone being uppity about it if they're overly sensitive.

I wouldn't call it racist but more of an effect of racism

pretty much. a lot of folk conflate racial with racist, and it makes it obvious when they start calling everything racist lol.

there are those who NEED to believe everything racial that makes them uncomfortable is inherently racist, though. all you can do is point it out to them and hope they have the sense to use that knowledge.

Still, the way the lead guy in the movie spoke... horrible acting. (There were times when his voice was all over the place, so... I guess the actor was the problem and not the "voice.")

exactly. chappelle doing white voice is very obvious and nothing like how they talk in Us.

i mean short of the director saying he made them do that i have to believe its their normal voices.

That happened to my brother. He dealt with a lot of wealthy (white) clients on the phone and they couldn't understand his name, so he changed his name to "James" at work. Even his work email has the name James.

Racism is the wrong word in this situation. Ethnocentric would be more appropriate.

Personally, I have a very hard time understanding Indian accents, to the point where I cant hold the conversation. I'm sure an American who spoke Indian might have a very bad accent in the reverse situation to the point where he could not be understood as well. It's not racism.

To be fair it can be hard to understand people of different races/nationalities accent. Some have more or less of an accent depending on the language the person is speaking in and what culture they are from and the person being spoken to.

That is the reason pretty much why so many companies have moved their customer support back to America because they got so many complaints about how no one could understand what the hell people were saying in India were they all used to be. Why do you think they keep advertising "U.S. based customer support" or some variation of in commercials?

Its not a racist thing, for the vast majority anyway, but if you are going to higher people to give customer support to someone in another country in a language that isn't their native tongue then you need to make sure people can actually understand them.

That's the thing, I listened to the calls. Any time someone would complain I would have to pull the call see if the complaint was valid.

They just had an accent. It wasn't a call where i was like "damn, wtf is he saying". They weren't getting complaints all the time either.

A lot would be like "Hey my name is ______" and they would be like "Your name is what? Let me speak to your supervisor"

We all know white voice is a legitimate thing, but being obtuse about your racism and providing your race isn't your saving grace to "not" be a racist.

"talk White" is something Black people used to be told to do by White people. hell, all Brown people were encouraged to "talk White" and were criticized if they didn't sound "American enough."
