The old dub was bad and is largely the cause of people thinking Shinji is whiny.

Guess its an anime weekend for me, Ive been binging Death Note (thanks to that topic about it a few days ago) and I guess thisll be next. Hopefully this dub isnt as bad as people are saying, not like the old dub was amazing or anything.

In all seriousness, I'm just glad nobody's talking about how Evangelion is super deep or psychedelic or mindfuck-y or whatever. It is to some extent but the overall message of the series, according to Anno himself, is pretty simple. No matter how hard things gets or how screwed up everything seems to be, just never give up and keep on trucking. Shinji is supposed to be antithetical to that stance but then changes by the end of the series where he decides to keep on trucking with the world that he was already given despite everything and everyone that he's lost.
Pretty simple story tbh because everything else, the battles and the dialogues and the imagery, they're all fluff. 90% of the Christian imagery don't actually say anything of value outside of anything that serves as a metaphor for the rapture or the apocalypse, and the kaijus being called angels and going out in a shape of a cross is literally the opposite of subtlety. The characters are cool and all, but all the purpose they serve is to paint a more realistic backdrop to when the rapture happens, while the only ones that really matters are Shinji and his dad, in which Shinji in particular is not fun to watch for most of the series, though serves his purpose in the narrative well. As a whole though, not something that I would ever call like the greatest anime of all time or even close to it, but it did influence the anime sphere in ways most animes cannot claim to have. --- "Iwata was awesome" - Mr. Nintendo https://i.imgtc.com/7dRrfE1.jpg ...
