You know, prior to the Trump presidency I thought China would outlast us and come to collect on our debts to it, though I was unsure when they would come to do such a thing. Nowadays? If they don't come to collect by January, 2021, then at the very least this will cost us, as a nation, to the point that such a time will come faster than if Trump had done nothing of the sort.

As it exists right now, it's not well executed.

However an organized trade war by the West against China should be a priority for the next US President. China's been shitting on the rest of the world for years and is only getting worse.

I don't really understand it now tbh.

I'd start with being skeptical, knowing Trump.

It's made me money on the stock market for sure.

Depending on what you had, it likely put your stock on sale.

It hurt mine at first, so I doubled down on BABA while it was cheap. I'm back in the green and the hysteria still hasn't fully recovered. I'd buy more right now actually if I had the funds.

Right now I think my new trading strategy is to just keep half my money liquid until the media causes some hysteria I can capitalize on.

China really can't afford to go all-out like that against the US, considering we're one of their largest consumers.

This, pretty much. China has been a bad faith actor in countless ways, from unfair trade practices to a near-complete disregard for intellectual properties to subsidizing its industries to espionage to the illegal activities in the South China Sea.

Granted, the other issue is that Trump has *multiple* trade wars going at once. It could potentially help the US by bringing jobs back here, but... meh.

Probably because there are so many individual problems rather than just one or two really cohesive issues.

This. If Trump wasn't busy being a moron and fighting trade wars with people who could actually be potent allies against a bad financial actor like China, this might have some teeth. As it is, it's basically watching two guys in a contest trying to see which one can punch themselves harder in the dick.

Sovereign debt does not work that way. You can't just call up a country and demand they pay all their debts to you. The only thing holding sovereign debt guarantees you is the interest payments on it; there is no timeline for repayment (and even if there was, no mechanism to enforce it - do you think the US would just shrug its shoulders and hand over the keys to the country if China tried to force the issue?)

China buys up US debt because it profits if the US economy is doing well, given that America is their largest export market. Buying US debt both gets them an income in the form of interest payments, but also helps ensure consumer dollars keep flowing to buy its products. The most harmful thing China could do to the US with American debt is to stop buying it.

Pretty much. China's a problem, but Trump's approach is moronically hamfisted and seemingly more concerned about throwing his weight around than actually driving positive change. It's also just targeting China, so even if the tariffs succeed in motivating American businesses to move their manufacturing out of China, they'll just move to another country with no regard for human rights that therefore has cheaper labour than domestic manufacturing would, rather than bringing it home.
