I just played a quick race on 50cc to test out the game and there was a pretty big distance between me and the other racers. Is the rubber banding more likely to be noticeable on 150cc?

It's my first Mario Kart since Mario Kart Wii so a lot of the changes threw me (selecting karts is one thing, but selecting tires? Gliders? Too many options for an old fogey like me) and there's so many characters to choose from now.

There will always be rubber banding.

Against the cpu you should have no problems. Online it's more noticeable, a lot of races come down to the last second and you can go from first to 6th in a blink of an eye.

Honestly I never noticed rubber banding on any MK games past MK64.

In MK8... at least once you get all the tracks memorized... it's really easy to get out in front and stay there. It's the abundance of items that screw you up and make it tricky to get the 3-star rating on each cup... at least imo

MK8 is probably the most fair in terms of rewarding skill over luck

It's much more hectic than the past titles. In singleplayer skill will benefit you more than luck - However, in online, unless you're in the top or bottom 3 places everyone will constantly be attacked/attacking. The top 3 places typically play peacefully because nobody wants to drag each other down.

And usually first place will be miles ahead of everyone because more coins = more speed.

Coins are nice, but the coin ITEM is awful and I hate whoever decided that needed to be in the item pool

You mean like, when they wasted a whole item slot for one measly coin? A coin that you can't really save or anything because as soon as you get thunderstruck or boo taken it's gone, and you already tend to have the max 10 coin easily anyway so it's completely pointless? That coin item?

Is it 10 coin max btw? That's what I have so far.

Yes 10 max. And coins you collect go towards kart parts

Mario Kart is the most luck-based game this side of a board game. There's a not-very-deep skill aspect in the form of driving decently and learning the opportune times to use items and beyond that its just a nonsense clamor of situations where there's just about nothing you can do beyond hope
