I think you're forgetting the part where some of those sites sell your personal information to those ad sites in order to target ads to you. They get paid either way. And intrusive ads shouldn't be the only way free sites make money. If anything we're pushing for a better way to make money by not assaulting people with obnoxious ads.

Even "pirating = theft" is weak as shit, because the "owner" of the pirated content still has their copy and the ability to sell it. It's just industries looking out for their own because they can.

That may sound a little extreme at first, but think about it. All the feeless online services you love such as YouTube, Google and even GameFAQs depend on ad revenue to make ends meet.

These companies are worth hundreds of billions of dollars, Im not going to compromise my experience to throw a few pennies their way. If I were on a small forum run by 1 person then sure. Otherwise their ability to make money is their own problem.

It's actually pretty reckless for anyone to be using a browser without an adblocker in 2019, as that's basically a form of ant-virus software if this point.

If you like and want to support a site, by all means, whitelist them after you know they're trustworthy. But browsing the Internet without protection from potential malware due to terrible ads is just a bad idea.

If ads were actually just ads, as in literal pictures that are just pictures and that's that, then a lot more people would be okay with ads

Internet ads are not that, though. They are so much more than ads. To refer to them as ads at this point is kinda insulting honestly.

I don't know what shady sites you visit but I don't have problems with advertisements at all I think people over exaggerate on how bad it is.

Go ahead: browse GameFAQs from your phone without any kind of adblocker. I estimate that within a week you'll start singing a different tune.

All I use is my phone I get adds on the front page and every other topic I enter has an ad between posts. PHub only gets me an add before certain videos and I can skip them after 5 seconds. If anything sites that provide news are the ones with terrible ads they're usually 30+ seconds and can't skip them.

I'll gladly stop blocking ads when ads stop:

- Tracking the user's internet behavior.
- Hoarding the user's private information.
- Getting in the way of content.
- Autoplaying audio or video.
- Coin mining or other malicious scripts.
- Outright lying: click to claim your prize! Your pc might have malware so download our toolbar!
- Misdirecting: fake 'Download Here' buttons or 'Press X to close'. Worst offender I've seen was a mobile ad that had a fake smudge on your screen, tricking you into tapping it.
- Showing NSFW ads on an otherwise SFW page.
- Hogging way more bandwidth (and loading time) than the actual content.

Advertisers have ruined it for themselves with their crappy behavior. If ad blocking means the end for a lot of websites, so be it. I much rather pay a subscription fee than have to deal with all of the above.

Also, this.

If they had just stuck to still pictures, or at most, animated gifs at the top or the side, like in 1992, I wouldn't use adblocking. But they had to go for videos with sound, and fancy Flash stuff that consumes resources. Go back to 1992 and I will stop blocking your ads.

Again, theyve had to go to more intrusive ads like the ones you mentioned because so many people block ads now. The flashier video ads yield more per view than banner ads, and that extra revenue is necessary to stay afloat because so many people block ads now. If it was like it used to be 10 or 15 years ago or so when ad blocking was in its infancy and hardly anyone did it, they could still make ends meet with inoffensive banner ads.

This mentality of Im just one person, what difference does it make? is a dangerous one. Like-minded people add up quickly.

Its how its just one empty soda can, whats the big deal? leads to a completely trashed area, and Its just my child thats not getting vaccinated, who cares? results in massive outbreaks of diseases that were previously under control.

At the very least you should unblock ads for sites you genuinely care about and want to support. Otherwise were gonna see more and more great sites go to a premium subscription model or eventually die off from an inability to generate enough ad revenue.

A site that hosts the ad images itself, links directly to the advertiser, and uses ?ref= or similar as the only tracking, is not going to be blocked by adblockers anyway.

If the site don't like ad blocking, they can make you have to pay to sign in.

Ad blocking goes hand in hand with having a freely viewed site.
To say otherwise is to claim entitlement to something you are not entitled to.

They have 0 rights to what program your device uses.

If you say so bud. It may not fit the precise legal definition of theft, but youre using a service without compensating them in the form of ad revenue. Youre draining the labor and resources necessary to maintain a website and giving zero back. Even if its not illegal, its absolutely unethical and a form of theft imo.
