I am obviously not a hockey fan, but I was wondering: Is it legal for the puck to leave the ice? Does a goal count if the puck leaves the ice anywhere along its path? What if the puck is in the air when it enters the goal?

I don't think so, Tim.

its an unavoidable consequence of physics for it to happen, if it werent allowed the sport wouldn't exist

Weird to ask a question about something you must have not even seen a single minute of, because watching even a single minute of hockey would have answered this question for you.

i have watched hockey on tv but the puck moves too fast for me to follow along

they should use special effects to highlight the puck so people can know what's going on

Yes. Its only a penalty if you are the defending team in your own zone and flick it into the crowd without touching the glass. As for goals, a player can score a goal off his stick with the puck in the air if the point of contact is below the crossbar.
