Went out to dinner with the girl I'm seeing and we decided on a nice seafood place in town.

Anyway we're having dinner and our server is dropping a check at the table next to us. I got the full story from him afterwards that one of the guys at the table gave him a card earlier in the night and said to put everything on it. So when he's dropping the check off one guy at the table freaks the fuck out and grabs this kid by the arm and is basically threatening him to undo the charge and bring the check to him.

Shit got way beyond the point of awkward and no one around was saying anything. I bit my tongue as long as i could. So I stand up and walk over to the table and put myself between him and the server and begin scold a grown man like a fucking child and tell him to let go of the guy.

Then he gets up and starts talking shit to me and saying he's going to kick my ass(this guy is well into his late 50s if not 60s and hammered drunk). I basically just stand there looking at him like the fucking idiot he is waiting for him to do something stupid until a manager finally came over to intervene and after another altercation between them kicked him out.

We got our meals comped so I left our server(the kid who was being threatened) a 20% tip plus the amount our entrees would have been.

What in the fuck is wrong with some people?! This was a nice restaurant, this wasn't just some ignorant fuckhead, he was clearly well off. I mean he was drunk but that is no excuse for behavior like that.

If it'd escalated into a fight there's a good chance I would have gone to jail.

Maybe not, I had a lot of strangers who were dining come by my table and tell me I did the right thing. If everyone there testified he was a drunk asshole who got what he had coming I might have been able to go home.

If he attacks you first and you got one witness, you're not going to jail. He might sue you (and probably lose), but you're not going to get arrested.

Nope, definitely got very quiet and awkward throughout the whole place.

A couple of people came to my table afterwards to tell me I did the right thing, but it would have been nice if those people stood up and shamed this assclown into submission in the moment

unless you had been really dumb about how you reacted, you probably wouldn't go to jail. the entire restaurant was your witness and they probably have cameras too. as long as he threw the first punch and you only did self defense, you would be fine . the key is to not hurt the person more than is needed to disable them from attacking you. and to stop the very instant they are no longer a threat. go more for disarming than knocking out or hurting
