USA thrashed Thailand 13-0 in Women's World Cup in France on Tuesday night and celebrated every goal

With Thai players left in tears, fans and commentators have slammed the 'disgusting' celebrations

But some viewers have defended the team, saying the players are just excited for the tournament

Former U.S. men's national team player Taylor Twellman criticized the American women: 'Celebrating goals (like #9) leaves a sour taste in my mouth like many of you. Curious to see if anyone apologizes for this'

Ex-U.S. women's player Abby Wambach supported her old teammates: '... for some players this is their first World Cup goal, and they should be excited... Would you tell a men's team to not score or celebrate?'

The debate over sportsmanship got so heated that former Canadian team player and current TSN analyst Kaylyn Kyle says she received death threats after criticizing the U.S. women

I don't mind at all and don't consider it bad sportsmanship. Any team that loses 13-0 in soccer, on the grandest of stages no less, deserves the embarrassment. Don't like it, git gud.

how much more disrespectful would it have been if the 13-0 team acted bored by themselves? or if they stopped treating the other team as if they stood a chance?

Shifting the narrative is the best way to squash an issue.

People need to shit the fuck up though. Teams celebrate when they score, get over it.

For me this really relates to the participation trophy issue. If they didnt like them celebrating, try harder to stop them from scoring? Idk.

The girls were and should be excited. Some of them may never play in another World Cup again.

Then again I have terrible sportsmanship hate losing and just in general Im a bad winner lol.

Without seeing any video of it, Im going to guess that they werent doing elaborate celebrations. Just probably doing the usual stuff of a big group hug and congratulating each other.

If thats all that happened, then this is being blown out of proportion.

But yeah male players are regularly criticised for the way they celebrate anyway

This is being way overblown though. It's the opening game of a world cup ffs. They would be idiots to 'go easy.

i feel like treating this as poor sportsmanship comes with the assumption that these goals weren't hard or they didn't have to try -- basically that the other team didn't belong in the game. that 13 goals isn't an accomplishment worth celebrating because the other team was simply so pathetic.

i think it's better sportsmanship to never stop treating your opponent as if they can compete with you, and to celebrate your wins against that. if soccer teams are just going to give up, though, install a mercy rule and get it over with.

Nah. They put together their best team to try to compete at the top level. Their team sucked. Why should the US team not celebrate beating another team? It isn't the US teams fault that France couldn't hang.

If it's a kids teeball game sure. I get that. But this is the top soccer players. Don't suck and you won't get your feelings hurt.

This. And I'm sure at some point the US team wanted to stop running up the score to be respectful, but since goal differential can make a difference whether you advance or not, they had to keep scoring.

In real football it's a bit different though. Right or wrong it's straight up disrespect and scummy to go for it on 4th down in the 4th quarter while being up 5+ TDs. Plus the score isn't the problem here, it's the celebrations some people are ass mad over.

depends on the alternatives. i think a chip shot field goal in that situation is absolutely running up the score, and a turnover on downs in enemy territory - with a score that far apart - is as meaningful as a punt.

i think the same is true of the opposite -- it's running up the score and meaningless to kick a field goal if you need 3 touchdowns in two minutes. constantly airing out the ball to try to make up an impossible lead is stupid and reckless, too. the pats lost in the 'right way' last year to the texans. they were well out of range so they just ran the ball and took their lumps.
