I just played FFVII on Switch and Aeris is the only default name they give us. So I go with the default.

Certain nerds have said in the past that 'Aerith' and 'Aeris' are supposedly pronounced the exact same way, which would make the debate moot in terms of voice acting. I doubt that's true, and even if it was, this is the same company that brought us 'Markwiss Ondore,' so I doubt the English VAs would get the memo.

1. They would be localizations of the same Japanese word, is what they meant. The difference between the two only exists in English.
2. What was that, FFX? Fifteen, twenty years ago? VA has come a long way in that time.

Mostly because SE went with it for Kingdom Hearts and Crisis Core and stuff, probably because they don't speak English themselves and don't get that it sounds dumb.

Really, the only use of "Aeris" is from when they populated her default name for the player to input a name. It even actually defaults to "Aerith" if you glitch past that part.

We're obviously talking about English.

Aeris is "Earisu" in Japanese. Which, if anything, is closer to Aeris.

Cloud isn't even Cloud in Japanese. Is Kuraudo.

I know you're talking about English, but the thing is, they pronounce things that way cause the Japanese language doesn't have the sounds in the names that they want to use. Character creators put Aerith intentionally, but they can't actually pronounce it.

The Romanji is Earisu. That's how it's pronounced in Japan. It's not "insulting" to say Aerith sounds bizarre, because even they don't say Aerith.

FFXII; it was a phonetic mispronunciation of the title 'marquis.' Even though it's French, I have a hard time believing that multiple English speakers had collectively never heard that word used before, so I've always assumed that someone at Squeenix was coaching them to pronounce it incorrectly.

The Romaji is the closest transliteration they can get so that it can be pronounced in the language. They don't say Aerith because the language doesn't have the -th sound.

By your logic, any word with a pronounced "th" sounds bizarre because they don't pronounce it. Also, even if you use romaji for all the characters, you would never be pronouncing "Aeris", you'd pronounce "Aerisu". "Aeris" is entirely a fabrication, a mistranslation. A misinterpretation of a transliteration of a name of latin root reference made by non-latin-root-language speaking people.

If they can't pronounce it, how is it offensive that it sounds like having a stroke when you're saying it correctly?

If I can't pronounce a "Xiang gua" should I be offended if someone else says it sounds silly when pronounced correctly?

Literally getting offended about something completely unrelated to you.
