There was a full blown campaign to make anti-gay sentiments perceived as negative, such as coining the "equal marriage" term (I am pro-gay marriage and pro-gay rights, but I always felt the term was a bit... dramatic. After all, they COULD marry exactly like hetero people do, which is exactly the problem, they needed something else). The campaign was effective, and didn't over-do or heavy hand it. Many people start to realize that nothing really changed, there wasn't an end to the marriage institution and it wasn't turning their kids (or frogs) gay. There were just no legitimate reasons to be against gay marriage in general other than being a giant dick. Most of the anti-gay arguments were just fear to monger and legalizing it only proved that point even more.
