Many people are sheep. When it was illegal, they think it's wrong because it's illegal. Once it's legalized, they think it should be allowed because it's legal.

This logic doesn't add up.

If they are sheep, how does it become legal in the first place?

Was he ever seen again, UnfairRepresent?

No not really.

Your argument is that most people are sheep so but lawmakers aren't? So all that changed is the view of lawmakers?

But then what changed the lawmakers?

And if people's views haven't changed because they are sheep, why was it put through federally under the knowledge that marriage equality would not be achievable at the state level in several states due to opposition?

Your "people are just sheep stance" is simutaniously incorrect and overly complicted.

I didn't find it obvious either. Many people were on social media bitching about things like 'if we let gay people marry, then people will push for marriage between human and dog... or human and lamp... or adult and child, or incest marriage! Or human and helicopter! WHERE WILL IT END?!" (well in some states, child and/or incest marriage is legal -_-). I just assumed because that dumb slippery slope nonsense isn't going anywhere after the fact, many people who bought into that logic have seen and realized "oh okay... maybe I was wrong to use the slippery slope argument. Maybe this was the right thing to do." That's just one example.

I do think the media had a very strong role in that.

I recall those TV ads with some female comedian (I forgot who) tearing into people for using "that's so gay" as an insult. She'd go like "imagine I said "that's so girl with zits in her face" instead?!" to a girl with zits, and stuff like that.

There was a full blown campaign to make anti-gay sentiments perceived as negative, such as coining the "equal marriage" term (I am pro-gay marriage and pro-gay rights, but I always felt the term was a bit... dramatic. After all, they COULD marry exactly like hetero people do, which is exactly the problem, they needed something else).

The campaign was effective, and didn't over-do or heavy hand it. It should be an example for other campaigns in the future, e.g. for shaming the use of MAGA caps or racism in general.

no, I think the point is... gay people could marry someone of the opposite gender just like hetero people can.

Technically speaking, that is equal marriage. It was a corny, misapplied term, but I am 100% behind the concept (allowing them to marry who they love, "love is love", and "don't tell me what to do in the bedroom").

"Whoever controls the media controls the mind." Jim Morrison

"I'm a soulless lawyer. Give me any opinion, and I can argue it." Megyn Kelly

we can quote many people about the media. everybody knows the media shouldn't be trusted, but most people make exceptions to things that feed their narrative. even if the source has been repeatedly proven to be manipulative and dishonest.

The internet did play a major role in exposing people to different ideas, hence why you saw a lot of religious people deconverting to either being agnostic or atheist. You also start seeing a lot of people question the legitimacy regarding homosexuality and if it were truly something that needed to be stigmatized or not.

But I think the biggest turn around was when federally, gay marriage became legalized. Many people start to realize that nothing really changed, there wasn't an end to the marriage institution and it wasn't turning their kids (or frogs) gay. There were just no legitimate reasons to be against gay marriage in general other than being a giant dick. Most of the anti-gay arguments were just fear to monger and legalizing it only proved that point even more.

I know a lot of people prefer it when change happens over time (my preferred way), but history has shown that most of the civil rights movement that has been successful have been done through some kind of force.

That makes no sense. Why can't people admit it to the public when it was common to do so in the past? It is almost as though public opinion has changed over time... and poll results reflect that. Weird.

I did come back but you ignored it. I never said "all people are sheep" like you keep insisting. It took an executive order to get the law rightfully changed after listening to a loud minority which helped many (again, not most or all) people realize it's not the end of the world. There are many people that would still be arguing against gay marriage if the law was not changed and who knows how long it would have taken if it was left entirely up to the voting populace.

I grew up in a family and community that could, in today's terminology, be called an "Alt-Right echo chamber". When I became an adult, I went out into the world, and found that the things that I had been taught my whole life were caricatures of reality.

No one tried to "make me "become" gay", there were not "satanists everywhere", and "Demoncrats" were not "forcing abortions on everyone". I didn't find ""the Mexicans" and "the Blacks" trying to take over". I found people just trying to live their lives in peace, and trying to be happy. I realized that I was taught fear and hatred, with Jesus and the Bible as the cover.

I'm not saying that this is everywhere, or even common, but it's my experience. It is because of this experience that I choose to be more open, and to consider points of view that are different from my own, and I'm willing to change my mind.

These people that raised me are still mired in their hatred in the same place, having not moved forward or gained anything. I have lived a rich and full life, free of the constant weight of fear, anger and hatred. I do not regret my choice in the least.

We're all products of environmental conditioning. Becoming self aware of that is one of the first steps to understanding mankind as a whole.

Makes you look at "morals" differently, too. Gives you new perspective of the concept of right and wrong/good and evil.

at some point I realized that I mostly moved out of fear and ignorance bestowed upon me by fundamentalist Christians.

I've said/done plenty fucked up things, and felt justified because it was written/implied in the Bible. sometimes things that weren't even in the Bible, but things Christians just label "Ungodly," anyway.

it took life experience for me to realize that I was indoctrinated in something that never really sat right with me to begin with. I was just afraid to question my faith.
