Current Events > What do I need to draw & color digitally?

Been a pencil & paper cartoonist my whole life, but I now want to dabble in the digital side of things. What do I need? A tablet and stylus pen, right? And a coloring software, I presume? Any reasonably-priced recommendations?

I used to animate solely with a mouse and keyboard, and honestly, if you're good with the pen tool in photoshop, you don't really need anything else. Tablets do help though.

As far as software goes, I know Abobe does their subscription service now, which isn't TOO bad, but if you can swing it, I'd recommend getting an older version of photoshop online somewhere.

Krita. Free, open-source, yet somehow is powerful enough to compete with commercial products like Photoshop and Clip Paint Studio.
If you're skeptical about its capabilities, look up Sara Tepes on Youtube, an incredible artist that uses Krita.

Tablets are very recommended, and if you're thinking of being serious, try a display tablet/cintiq.

Haha you can make art with paint.net(that's the name of the program and its free), and the mouse thats on your laptop! That's what I did for a few years till I got a wacom tablet that just sits in my closet now....

Anyway, sorry I don't really has any advice here, I only doodle every now and then on my phone and I'm not good at it, but if you like drawing on your phone for whatever reason autodesk sketchbook is my favorite drawing app I've tried. Gonna want to get a stylus tho if your phone doesn't already have one.

Thanks for all the helpful advice, guys! So, let's talk tablets. I want one that will allow me to draw directly onto the screen, as that seems to be the best for ease & accuracy. Would you guys agree that that's the best kind to have? If so, what price range would I be looking at for a relatively good one? It seems most people use Ipads, and those are a little pricey...but I'll get one if I must.

Definitely the best kind to have, but I wouldn't buy an iPad because first of all, Apple charges 100 dollars for their stylus, and second, you're going to be limited on the software you can use with it. I also don't think a Cintiq is necessary. In this day and age there are actually a wide variety of high quality tablet monitors that go for half the price of a Cintiq.

I use something that I wouldnt personally recommend, as the resolution is kind of odd and the colors are pretty off, but I can give you a few GOOD recommendations once I get home this afternoon.

i use a cintiq tablet. As for software i mostly use photoshop but i recently started using Clip Studio and its pretty damn cool and cheap as well

I'm also looking for software recommendations, especially when it comes to digital drawing.

Adobe Illustrator is trash, so I'm leaning more towards Photoshop. I own Clip Studio Paint, but the learning curve seemed pretty high.
