I had plenty of time to hang out with friends outside of school. I even had a job that I did during HS. I also was the president of the engineering club and was part of our mathletics club that did math competitions on Saturday.

You are really overrating the amount of "extra" work you have to do for AP classes.

my high school was in a rich neighborhood with a ton of immigrant kids, the culture was such that anything less than 5 AP classes each in your junior and senior years of high school meant you were a dumb kid, rather than that taking them meant you were smart >__>

DuranOfForcena posted...
AP and normal classes really are for different types of people. some people find it difficult to do a fair amount of meaningful assignments that are actually engaging and get you to think critically about things, and some people find it difficult to drudge through endless, meaningless busywork that doesn't actually teach you anything except short-term memorization.

This was the thing in NYC. There was always two segments. The people taking APs and honors and the people barely passing remedial stuff. One was mostly white people and immigrant children and the other was everybody left in the hood (all colors of people including poorer immigrants and whites).

Funny thing is that everybody that put even a little effort in no matter the situation they were in are doing pretty good now. It's only the people who gave up that are still struggling.

Yeah thats me, except they call it standard not remedial

Honestly AP classes weren't even that hard.

They seem hard at my school. They make you read lots of books in English and have active discussion, in social studies you have to not just memorize names and rivers. In science you have to think. In math you have daily hw. In Spanish you have so much hw and cant take exam with a dictionary

Sounds right to me. Were the normal classes not this way?

Uh no

Math- you watch teacher do it and class work which kids goof on and teacher gets mad lol
Science- memorize vocab and thats it
English- round robin reading the whole time, no hw, only honors and AP get assigned novels
Social studies - memorize facts, do a coloring book on geography
Spanish- vocab, we get to use a dictionary on tests but not quizzes

We didn't have AP classes in my high school. They had straight-up college courses through the university extension program. I took first year English, pre-calculus, first year physics, first year business, an intro to theater arts, and I think a US history class or something like that. I don't remember any of it being terribly hard.

What a dumb topic, lol.

Anyway, I never took AP in HS. Went no higher than honors, which wasn't that hard. I know I could have handled AP if I applied myself more, but I had a lot of personal problems at the time. Eventually I said fuck it and stopped attending school altogether. Ended up graduating at 20 years old.

I had daily homework in all of my math classes from like 3rd grade on.

As for reading books & discussing them in English-- A, that's fucking easy & B, that's a better way to learn in my experience than just writing papers.

As for Spanish, I took several foreign languages over the years & never was anyone allowed to use a dictionary.

That is NOT ducking easy. You have to read the book and think about it! And answer detailed questions and use critical thought. This is way too fucking hard especially for teens! So many hard words, at least in my classes we dont explain the book, we just read in class and go over the question in textbook which are still hard but whatever

Also you guys must have behaved peers. I was loud in class but nothing compared to half my classmates

Fun times tho I dont remember the academic stuff but remember the fun battles in class

Hard disagree on saying high school is the best time of your life by the way. APs were one of the only ways to make high school more interesting and fulfilling. College is much better time for life experiences.

I disagree. High school is A-mazing! You have fun times with your core group of friends and have lots of fun moments. You can joke around, hit on girls and have dance battles in the hallways

How are AP interesting and fulfilling iyo? If its too hard or too much work it doesnt make hs fun. Standard at least you can have fun

Well maybe you might think that way and that's totally fine, but having more challenging classes forces you to try your best. Because I tried my best and succeeded, I became a much better person for it. I learned how to discipline myself, how to think, and how to ask for help when I need it. I think even you can see the value of that.

Plus, I made it fun by having friends that thought the same way. There were plenty of socials and parties on our down time when we aren't working hard. Work hard, play hard after all.

Since we're on the subject, quick question for everyone here.

Outside the final at the end of the year, did you guys outside of NY have a thing called a Regents test for every subject? That shit was so fucking annoying and for the most part, our classes were entirely focused on those exams. They would have them during January or June. We still had finals on top of that. Add in APs and shit was so stressful for very little outcome when I look at it over 15 years later.

Do you actually analyze a book you read? I dont I just read and not think

And yes, concepts are hard! Its like a video game

I am in normal mode, if I go to hard mode or extreme I lose 100 times

Face it, honors and AP are for people who like school and want to go to college. Standard is for peeps who just want to have fun, never do work and enjoy high school

That ain't it, sis. You can analyze anything. Some texts may have avenues for exploration than others, but if nothing else you can always analyze a work in its historical or cultural context. And in Harry Potter's case, there's a lot of theme analysis to be had.

I took 6 AP classes in HS. I got a 5 on four of the exams (Math, Biology, Physics, Computer Science), and didn't bother taking the exam for my other 2 classes (English and History).

I've already talked about my AP English class on here a couple times. I shouldn't have been in it. I didn't want to be in it. But I was forced to take it by the school for some stupid bullshit reasons. I nearly failed the class and the only reason I was able to pass (and thus graduate with my classmates and not get fucking held back because of an AP English course) was because the teacher knew about all the bullshit and pulled some strings to basically give me a do-over on the final. I loved that teacher, but I despised everything about that class.

The History one was more of an unfortunate series of events. Our teacher, Mr. Ambrose, had a heart attack in the middle of class a little under half-way through the year. We got a substitute, but because it was so sudden they didn't have anybody who was actually a history teacher to fill in. So we got this guy who was clearly out of his depth with the subject and was really just trying his best to not drown until Mr. Ambrose got better and came back. They originally thought he would be back in a few weeks, and things seemed to be going well with his recovery. We had of course put together a big "get well soon" card, and one of the kids in the class was part of the film/photography club so he got the club to put together a video with all of us wishing him well. He got to see the video two days before he was due to be released from the hospital, and the film club kid had gone to get a little video of his reaction to bring back for us to watch the next day. So we see the video and go home after school thinking he's getting out of the hospital in the morning and he'll be back before we know it.

..........then in the middle of 3rd period the next day, the principal gets on the P.A. system to let everyone know that during the night one of the valves in Mr. Ambrose's heart that had been weakened by the attack had failed and they hadn't been able to resuscitate him. Our P.A. system was connected to TVs in most of the classrooms so they played our video to him for the whole school, then they played the video of his reaction to it, before having a minute of silence. It was fucking gut-wrenching, tbh. He was a fantastic teacher and pretty much everybody loved him. Most of our class wanted to take the AP exam in his honor, but we all knew nobody was ready for it because we hadn't been able to really get into the material enough. So we decided as a class that instead of taking the exam, we were all going to leave school during the exam's time slot to go place flowers on his grave. The principal was more than happy to look the other way and let us leave the school during hours, but because they weren't technically supposed to allow that they couldn't get us a school bus to use. And other stupid rules meant we weren't allowed to drive our cars off of school grounds until the end of the school day. So the principal went to a few of the people who lived across the street from the school and got it set up so that we could use a loophole and park our cars in their driveways off of school grounds and thus not break the ridiculous rules. XD

Overall it was a damn tragedy. But it was also very cool to see so many people in positions of authority agreeing that the rules were asinine and not intended for the extenuating circumstances, and they cared enough to go pretty far out of their way to help a bunch of kids who'd been through a lot of shit.

Trust me I'm aware of that (I'm a high school bio teacher btw, and have a special ed license), but ask if "anyone actually took a classes in high school" is a little off base. Many, many students both take and get 3 and above on AP tests, and earn college credit. Even in "lower performing" schools.

The current push is actually "AP for all," in order to expose more students to college-level content and pace.

Haha you're 100% right about that. That's why it's a "push" and not a "mandate." Some students simply can't handle that level of rigor and pace, and that's ok. But, everyone should at least get the opportunity, especially if they intend on going to college.

And not going to college is ok too.

I don't know about you but I was bullied pretty badly in high school and I definitely don't miss it. The bullies were all in non-AP classes, too. Everyone's experience is different.

Yeah if you were bullied it wouldnt be fun. The jocks and cheerleaders usually were in my classes they had the studious people in honors or AP.

There was one nerdy kid who got picked on a lot. He got his backpack turned around and people would steal his stuff in class. He had to transfer

Got a 3 on my AP calc test. Was enough to get me credit for calc 1 and 2 in college.

I took basically every AP class option that was available. Started as a 2nd year student credit wise when I went to uni.

Are you sure this was high school and not kindergarten?

Schools didn't have AP classes when I was in high school (mid-1980s). You could test-out of certain classes in college though.
