Another thing thats illegal, you cant ask for their birthday.

a lot of youngsters will give that information away anyway without you even asking.

so tell me about yourself

welliwasbornonmay17

They usually don't give the year though but it's not hard to estimate.

I worked for a temp agency and anytime I saw someone get dropped off or just anything except get out of their own car I basically had to say "we'll give you a call" and then red list them.

I don't believe you're supposed to do that after hiring either.
"Mom-mobile" is largely irrelevant in Uber/Lyft-era anyway.

Why cant you ask if they have a car?

Is the proper way "reliable transportation"?

Because, "reliable transportation" makes owning a car irrelevant.

Strange because I've had employers that require credit checks.

That is after you've been offered a position though.

But yeah, real easy way around it is asking if they have reliable transportation. An employer doesn't need to know HOW you get to/from work, only that you can on your scheduled times with no fuss.

Man, I'm glad I didn't have a contract with that agency. I've only been driving for two years thanks to childhood trauma and anxiety.

Never would've had a chance to make my reputation as a punctual, reliable worker.

If you are not satisfied with them just saying yes to reliable transportation, just nod and be silent. The candidate will probably explain.

what a joke, "Do you have a car" is on our job application which have been around since 1998. As we pay for their gas, that question is actually relevant.

Short, simple and get to the point.
Do you have a car - Yes, if yes; are you willing to get paid more to pick up employees?
Do you have a car - No, are you willing to get picked up from one of our employees for a small fee?

him - "So what, that shouldn't play a factor if I get hired or not."
Me - "I'm not hiring you"

Than PR told me I was suppose to ask it this way,"Do you have a reasonable means of transportation to get to work?"

Which is understandable, because although I don't have a car, I DO have a bike that I can use. I've been asked if I have a reliable form of transportation plenty of times in job interviews. Never straight up asked if I had a car, though.

I was just asked over the phone, "Are you relocating to this town? Because it is some distance from where you live."

I replied, "It is not a problem becuase I already drive to my current job which is the same distance."

Their reply "Ok, great!" and then proceeded to schedule a face-to-face interview with me.

TC is a shit interviewer who interviews even worse candidates.

Wow this topic blew up while I was gone.

So yeah I recognize that I phrased my question wrong and can understand how it can be taken the wrong way. However, I also learned from PR we're not allowed to even ask the question to begin within the state of California because it goes into financial, which transportation falls into one of them. I honestly think that's kind of dumb we're not allowed to ask questions regarding transportation because we have seen reasons to be concerned when it comes to employees coming to work on time.

For those who don't know me, I'm a Senior Manager at a company that I worked for about 7-8 years. One of my responsibilities is to do interviews for new entries at our job and I've been doing it for 4 years already with no complaints directed at me at all. All I was taught was that I was to ask "behavioral" questions over "technical" questions... oh and we're not allow to discuss the big 4, politics, sex, race, or religion. I was never notified about financial reasons was another one, but never asked questions about that (well except the transportation stuff).

I don't normally ask about it though, the exception was with this interviewee because he came to the interview 10 minutes late. It's only those people that I did the "inappropriate" car question, but I never outright say it. Normally to break the ice I normally say something about rush hour being terrible and then eventually leading into the question. I learn from my mistake, it was just an interesting thing to know was all, but I still think it shouldn't be illegal to ask questions about transportation.

They basically just gave me (and everyone else in the company) a heads up about it. It wasn't a big deal or anything, well unless it gets to a lawsuit for some reason.

Payroll would do that. Your gonna give your full birthday to any company, they just can't use it as an interview question.
