There's a hockey game on TV. I don't know anything about the sport, but a lot of times I think I'd like to.

How do people usually do it? Is it something that your parents watched and so you did too? Do you just decide to start watching one night? How does anyone afford to watch a lot of the games?

You just wait for the fights.

It's like Nascar with wrecks. I don't need to know how to build an engine in order to enjoy a 200mph car doing cartwheels.

I always hated it when Nascar was on. I'd go to visit some of my cousins and they'd be glued to the TV for hours just watching what seemed like cars going in circles.

I know that driving the cars is actually incredibly complex and nuanced, but I don't see how anyone finds it entertaining to watch.

I played hockey for 30 years so that got me into hockey. Other sports I started watching with my dad as a wee lad so that got me into them.

You learn how the game works.

Start with the rules. Then positions. Then plays.

Playing video games got me into a lot of sports. Watching old videos and learning about the characters and history of the game through ESPN and the like.

Also, the business side of it can be pretty interesting.

Playing football as a kid got me into it. I didn't play baseball or basketball, so I'm not into them. Baseball, at all, but I kind of follow basketball without really understanding the rules.

I got into hockey and basketball by playing the video games. However, both my teams (Ducks & Lakers respectively) suck right now.

My parents both desperately wanted to get me into sports, but that failed. I learned to appreciate em a few years back on my own time, and then I got super into Sumo.

That's something else I wondered: how do you choose which team to follow/root for?

I've been a casual fan of some teams largely for geographical/familial reasons. I kind of forgot that I used to watch college football; I had an easy choice there since I live in Alabama. I stopped watching after I graduated though.

I generally only like local teams (Rams, Ducks, Lakers, Angels but baseball is boring af, Cal State Fullerton because I went there). However, I like Clemson and Baylor because I have nephews going there. The Packers are really the only team I like not related to any of that, and I picked them because I was learning about their history right around the time the Rams moved to St. Louis. >_>

Home teams. I'm born and raised in Mass so the choices are easy and have been quite rewarding
