I guess I could concur with this. PS1/N64 was the last generation where most games were pure games instead of tidbits of gameplay constantly interrupted by cutscenes.

I could see an argument that the 5th gen was the paradigm shift that separates old school from more modern on account of 3D. There were a handful of 3D games on SNES but they ran like crap. 5th gen was when the tech was finally there to make it worth doing.

When you consider that virtually every game since then has either been 3D or indie, there's really no mystery as to why some people would use this as the cutoff.

My usual "old school" dividing line on any topic, with only a few exceptions, is one question...

Can you remember clearly a time without internet?

This question is pretty much the crossroads generationally and culturally. Not all encompassing, but a pretty clear gap exists based on your answer to this question.

It makes it a little flexible I understand. Internet is older than 1995, but 1995 is when internet became a household thing. However it wasn't until 2001 that it was in over 50% of households.

Personally Atari was my first system, and I initially was going to say NES or before. But thinking about it, PS1 for the most part looks really old graphically compared to today that I could see it now being old school.

Of course this is all temporary.
