Not so much dialysis itself, but all the people who work there.

My nephrologist has been pushing me to get back into weight lifting for months. Now before I got my fistula, everyone told me that I wouldn't be able to lift much with that arm otherwise I'd hurt it. He has insisted that this is only when you first get it and wouldn't be the case if I started weightlifting.

So today I tell one of the techs that I am getting a membership with a gym and they absolutely flip the fuck out, and there is a damn meeting with everyone that works there telling me how that's such a dumb idea and it's going to destroy my fistula.

I tell them that it was the doctor that works there that has been pushing me to start lifting weights again for 3 months now. Suddenly they all change their tune and are like "oh, it's probably okay then."

So now I'm wondering if this is just a ploy to get me to ruin my fistula in an attempt to get me to move to Peritoneal dialysis since he spent the better part of a year begging me to switch to it.

I don't know, I don't trust any of these god damn people anymore cause they constantly fuck with my meds unnecessarily and give me all sorts of bad information and advice. This shit fucking sucks.

Why are you on dialysis and what's a fistula

Kidney failure, it's the vein they enlarge that they stick the needles into.

Due to my muscle mass they say I'd have to be hooked up for like 6 to 12 hours a day.

Also I don't trust my doctor at all after he pushed for me to get my fistula only to delay my dialysis treatment for a whole year. It's a bit of a story I'll maybe tell it when I get to my computer

Sorry to hear that, I fortunately had good luck with my dialysis clinics and doctors. I hear nasty stories about malpractice, but I guess someone is watching out for me

I've had a few patients with fistulas and catheters and I thought doing anything with the fistula arm is a no no >_> (ie: lifting them by that arm, taking a BP on that arm, etc.)

That's the thing, while I haven't been weight lifting I still do a lot of heavy lifting and they've never said a word about my fistula acting up or anything.

I still bring in all the groceries in one trip, I help my friends move all the time. Hell, I just helped my friend move a piano this weekend.

But it's hard for me to trust my doctor because he's steered me wrong in the past. He basically rushed me to get a fistula, acting like I needed to get into dialysis ASAP and then after I got the fistula he said I had a miraculous breakthrough and could postpone dialysis. And then he delayed me starting dialysis for a year. Everyone I talk to says it's a miracle the fistula even survived not being used for a year. That's not even getting into the fact that since he rushed me getting the fistula I basically had to use an out of network surgeon and ended up spending all of my savings on the surgery. And then as soon as I actually start dialysis, he's pushing me to go straight to PD making the fistula seem completely pointless.

Ugh I don't know I should probably look into changing doctors or something but there's not a lot of dialysis centers nearby. The next closest one is like 30 miles away.
