As a homeowner of a mid 50s home.

This is how I look at this for example. Something happens with a circuit breaker. Ok. Replace it. They don't make that type anymore. Then transfer the wires off that one and add it to another circuit that can take it without overloading it. Keeping in mind that this act isn't doing anything dangerous. A licensed electrician will say no. Because CA code requires blah blah, bs, drivel, yada yada. So it'll cost 4x as much because now you need a whole new circuit box and all new circuits. To where you say fuck it, watch a YouTube diy video and handle it myself. Same with a water issue.
And I use this as an example because this exact thing happened to my grandfather before he died with this house. Of course YouTube wasn't around and he did know how to do it himself he just didn't want to mess with it at first because he was getting old. But he ended up doing it himself.

As much as many don't want to admit it, there is a difference between doing repair work right and safely. And doing it "right" as defined by whatever state you're in. And a lot of times that "right" way of doing things is honest to god nothing but a bunch of horse crap made to screw you out of more money.

And yes. This would allow for a lot of poor, jury-rigged work to be done.
But the thing is. In most cases it's poor jury-rigged work to begin with that needs fixing. And I can't afford the mint it costs to repair it the "right" way. I just need it jury-rigged again so I can move on with life.

I'll laugh at whatever I find funny whether you like it or not.
