And this is coming from someone who didn't like the first one all that much. I can't believe it got so many bad reviews because I legitimately enjoyed a lot. I think it's just a difference in tone. This one was so much more of cheesy "good monsters fighting against evil monsters" plot like the original movies. That's not to say it was goofy, but it definitely wasn't a serious premise like the first and just focused on making the monsters have more character and personality.

It still suffers from the problem of have too many scenes with the human characters, I especially hated how they would cut away from monsters fights to show humans in peril so much, but I still think they handled it a lot better than the first movie. The characters are all allied with MONARCH so they have a good reason to be around the monsters all the time (as opposed to some boring army guy always happened to be in right place everywhere), and I thought they were actually compelling characters in their own right. I like how they aren't just randomly in the middle of things, they have important goals involving the monsters, and are a factor in the fights themselves. The monsters make the most difference, but the humans have their impact so their inclusion isn't so out of place.

And I loved all the references to the classic movies. The first one felt like it was it was doing more it's own thing with influences from the originals, but this one goes all out with terminology (using classic names), playing the old theme music, and easter eggs everywhere (realizing that the woman assigned to Mothra's outpost was a twin was fantastic).

The only other major complaint was (MAJOR SPOILER): Having a nuclear bomb act like a "power up" for Godzilla bordered on poor taste considering why the series was created. To their credit, they do address this in the movie, and Serizawa's scene was really well done, but I'm not sure how well that will go over.

I'm honestly surprised by how much I liked this movie, and I'm not even a crazy huge Godzilla fan. I think the more you enjoyed the classic movies the more you'll get out of this, which is probably why movie critics don't like it that much. It really is more of a sci-fi and "superhero" Godzilla film rather than the more realistic portrayal the first movie had and I prefer it that way.

I'm seeing it tonight! Posted this in the movie topic:
Hearing all these poor receptions for Godzilla and I'm still feeling pretty confident I'll like it. I've seen a majority of the Godzilla movies and the human element sucks more often than not. Give me trashy monster fights with great production value and I'll be happy.

Just got back from it. I wasn't super into beginning or middle, but the final fight more than made up for it. Super Saiyan God-Zilla bringing down a nuclear spirit bomb on Ghidorah too good

I legit could not care less for the human drama. especially the whole sacrifice in the end by the mom, she was a crazy bitch the whole movie and I'm supposed to feel sympathy how?

Best girl in that movie was by far Mothra. Saved her man multiple times and what did she get? Nothing. Ungratefulzilla. Somehow was the most emotional death of the movie.

I only had a couple gripes with the movie. I think Charles Dance's character was underutilized. Fortunately, it looks like he may be in Godzilla vs. Kong or some future movie. I also wish Mothra had done more. They actually did a really good job with Mothra, but I would have liked to see her attempt to take on Ghidorah alone at least. That's something she's done frequently in past movies. Finally, I hope they're done with the family drama for the human side of the story. I think Dr. Chen and the surviving Monarch people should be the primary human characters in the next one.

Otherwise, I thought it was fantastic. Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah looked great as well. I think this might have been my favorite portrayal of Ghidorah in the franchise.

Rodan feels like he was actually a serious threat for the first time since his original appearance in his solo movie way back in '56 - was so great to see him shown some respect. And yeah, Mothra was amazing. She's my favorite kaiju and everything about her was done so well. I also wish she could have done a bit more in the final fight, but oh well. From the quick clip in the credits of a second egg I wager we haven't seen the last of her, though I wouldn't expect her back as early as GvK.
