As a game, it was terrible. Invincible enemies, escort mission and backtracking half of the game, limited inventory, breakable weapons, etc.

With that said, it's story and atmosphere were great and those were what mattered for a silent hill game.

It has problems, it's got issues, and yet it's still my second favorite Silent Hill game. The location of South Ashfield Heights alone is rich and palpable for multiple stories that are only briefly touched upon with Henry roaming around the remains of livelihoods torn to pieces by this dude that desperately wants to reconnect with his "mother."

Silent Hill 4 is wonderful, Walter Sullivan is just such a fascinating focal point I didn't even mind having an invincible half possessed dumb as rocks lady that couldn't climb latters at fucking all to babysit through half the game. If I'm only playing for fun I don't really need to worry about her anyway, just leave her ass in a room full of the enemies her endless bloodlust gets her trapped in and if she gets too annoying I just take out my pent up aggressions with a shovel or axe to the face every now and then lol

I liked how it was basically Walter's story, and Henry being unfortunate enough to move into the apartment was totally random

4 is the weakest of the four original Konami games, and the only SH i haven't finished (imo anyway)

All incarnations of Walter are among the creepiest things in all of media. You got your creepy child Walter, Disturbing hobo murderer Walter, undead chaos deity Walter, giant ill fitting skin Walter, self crucified in the secret closet Walter...all of them just freak me right the fuck out everytime I see 'em but still somehow manages to garner some degree of sympathy since his backstory is so incredibly twisted. Also, I totally want to bang his mom

I honestly liked the invincible ghosts. It really added to the tension. Plus there were enough swords around that you could permanently spike each one.

I wasn't really a fan of the poltergeists though. The Room should have just been a safe place.
