I have a Bowflex branded bench and dumbbells (the dial-a-weight kind). Is that acceptable?

Gotdamn Bowflex MACHINE is pure POS. There is a limit to how much weight you can go up to, and there is a safety discrepancy when it comes to chest exercises. There will be a point where the weight needed to do chest exercises is too much for your arms to pull the cords by yourself in the position you are in, requiring a second person or spotter to help you which makes the bowflex useless.

I wouldn't wish the bowflex on anyone.

hmmm.... so it would be a good machine for beginners but once you really get into it and start putting on muscle it rapidly becomes useless?

Yes, depending on how quickly you go at it, it might become useless after 6 months. But probably around a year would be average. I "maxed" out the machine in a year and I have to get rid of it from my garage, its been sitting there for 5 years being worthless.

The machine was more or less designed for casuals who just want some fitness but have no desire to build their body up. BUT I will admit, it did get my body from shlubby to semi-decent.

Ok cool, I found one of the spendier Bowflex models used for only $100 so I picked it up last week as I am just getting into lifting for the first time since high school. I will transition to a gym membership after a year or so as long as I keep to it

Well ****, for a 100 bucks, it should do you good. By the way, I just realized bowflex makes several types of systems. I was referring to their Revolution system with the resistance discs. Not their bendy stick ones. And obviously not any of their cardios.

Here is the most bowflex did for me:

tkCM5ch

You ever see those bowflex commercials where the guy is all ripped? That is complete BS, bowflex cannot get an average guy to that point.
