And I'm just sitting here wondering, who will clean up all the trash of people waving their flags around for the photo and gram?

No one usually. Too much effort and risk involved.

You'd think mountain climbers would be keen on not littering but you'd be wrong.

I think trying not to die is a lot more of pressing issue for them.

The people who climb it are suicidal the risk if death is too high. They leave trash all over the place and climb it for a self satisfaction or a useless goal. I could understand the first time someone ever climbed it or reached the top of it for research/science.

Why climb it now? What reason do they have to climb it? Arrest all who attempt to do because it's useless/pointless and it's pretty much suicide. Something is clearly wrong with these people as it makes no logical sense to climb it.

I considered going to Mt. Everest sometime in my lifetime, until I found out about their fecal problem. There's an outhouse at only one base camp or so. Thanks to the popularity in the recent decades, people crap all over the place and it's a serious problem that the environment is contaminated with urine and feces at each of the camps.

For the thrill of the adventure and to feel like they've accomplished something meaningful in their lives. You're blowing this way out of proportion like it's a total waste of time. I'd recommend you check out the manga Kokou no Hito. It's an incredible story following a guy who devoted his life to mountaineering.

That is not an excuse. They chose to go there

You make it sound like they will die if they don't litter

It's a pretty big mountain and it's not like cops are gonna be willing to find and follow them up there. >_>

Dear scientific community,

Yep, it's snowy up here. Dunno what I was expecting.

I mean, he has a point, there are plenty of scenarios where you just die on Mount Everest that are beyond your prediction or control. If there's a random blizzard you die. If there's an avalanche you die. If a rockface gives out you die. If you fuck something up you die.

And it's not like it's a "if you go outside a tree might fall on you!" type of situation, those are common occurences on Everest and you're stuck there for days/weeks at a time depending on how far up you've gone.

Everest has become much more accessible in modern decades, but it's still one of the most dangerous recreational undertakings for any human. For every 10 climbers who reach the summit, 1 dies along the way. And those dead bodies are often just left there (and even used as trail makers), as it's impossible/impractical to take them down above a certain altitude. The cold just preserves them from decay indefinitely. There is an interesting website with pictures of these bodies, but it might be iffy on TOU appropriateness.

However, Everest is far from the most dangerous 8K meter mountain. That honor goes to Annapurna, which has a fatality rate of 34%. And keep in mind, the sample who are climbing it in the first place are already world-class climbers. Death would be almost 100% assured for the weekend-warrior types who will occasionally try Everest.

Is it mainly the low oxygen levels that kill the people? Or is the peak really that pointy that people have to actually 'climb', and die from accidents like falling.

I believe people mostly die from altitude sickness, yes.
