Unfortunately its one of those venues that are very hard to put back in the bottle.

As a country Mutually Assured Destruction is basically the only way to protect yourself against nukes.

But yeah 100% disarmament would be nice, to mitigate any chance of a world ending missile war >_>

Because nukes are the only thing that stopped the US and USSR from having a massive devastating conventional war. A conventional war between the US and USSR would have been worse than WW2

What's scary is the concept of mutually assured destruction fails when one of the parties doesn't care about their own continued existence.

One of these days, a terrorist group is going to get their hands on a nuke, and that's when the next nuke will be used.

That's impossible. You had no idea your neighbor was developing it, and he already blew up two rooms in another neighbor's house before you realized it.

..which would require a conventional war that will convince the side getting the death laser to get it faster and use it.

Uh, big war going on. Enemies trying to get their own genie to destroy us first. It wasn't exactly a shits and giggles project.

Though, yeah that is a simplification. Study into radioactive materials and radiation were big in pursuing medical treatments, and the bomb possibility was something of concern. Without that study, we wouldn't have the bomb, but we'd be short x-rays, chemo therapy, lots of medical scans, probably more.

Russia tried that with the Tsar Bomba and it was so unwieldy that even the smaller version couldn't fit on anything but a modified bomber. You don't need super nukes when you can fit up to 14 warheads on a single missile.
