So I recently just made a topic about ghosting here (with all the context and everything): https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/77746153#10

But apparently an email update showed that she did leave emergency contact information with the HR department (her mom and her boyfriend). Now why did they tell me in person she didn't have any emergency contact, I have no idea and apparently why they didn't contact them is a mystery even to me (HR hasn't responded back yet). The reason I made such a big deal about "ghosting" was because that was all the posts I saw on my business twitter account (plus the way she reacted to our receptionists didn't help either). It wasn't until I received a DM from one of her close family member, in which they explained that they were never contacted and that she had a health and safety reason for why she couldn't respond, did I email the HR department about it.

So yeah I stand by that ghosting is still rude and unprofessional, but looks like the "ex-employee" wasn't in the wrong, but rather our stupid HR department for negligence.

LOL, Shocking.

There's generally one decent person in HR, and the rest tend to be condescending pricks.

Yeah your HR REALLY dropped the ball and its a good reminder to people who have teams you need to have contact (and address information) for your employees for cases like this or if they snap and go crazy and threaten you guys...you need to know where they stay

Yeah, now it makes more sense why she was yelling at our receptionists (it didn't help I talked to her in a condescending manner either), now there's a whole heap of mess with this crap. I'm not looking forward to going to work tomorrow, but good thing I'm organized and have everything documented to know I wasn't in the wrong (and I'm pretty fucking sure it's HR that's at fault). But it's going to be awkward as fuck if she gets her job back.

this.

If there's an HR, isnt' there also employee orientation/training which also talks about grounds for termination including dereliction, even if HR doesn't call their emergency contacts?

Emergency contacts are for when an employee is injured while on the job, not a line of defense against termination.

I can only speak for myself, but I didn't get anything like that when I first started working there (then again, I came in as an mid-senior level, not a new entry level). So I'm not entirely sure how the thing is suppose to work as well. I only know accounting, but you can bet your butt when this whole thing is over we're going to have a mandatory "training" session about this.

Yeah, I realize I'm being overtly emotional about this crap. I just texted my friend the situation and his response was, "Dude, you're not being accused of sexual harassment or anything that extreme, just fucking relax. Like goddam man."

I mean, it's common sense. Did she come in after realizing her paycheck didn't get deposited?

Honestly, I don't even know right now. I'm not even sure if I am suppose to be sharing this because I might be giving a butchered version of the whole situation. Hopefully it gets all cleared up by tomorrow.

So a brief summary:
SUMMARY:
- OP is management
- staffer didn't show up for scheduled shifts for 2 weeks, did not give warning or notice
- OP tried contacting staffer to no avail
- HR claimed there was no other contact info
- OP assumes girl quit, and files proper paperwork
- staffer shows up in week 3 pissed off she doesn't have a job anymore
- Turns out HR DID have more contact info
- apparently staffer had a valid reason for not working
- staffer set her legion of social media followers on the company

So a few comments.
1. It is not your responsibility to contact a staffer if they don't show up. It is their responsibility to notify you of shit like this.
2. You have a valid case for job abandonment since she never gave notice or contacted you/HR
3. She is incredibly spiteful got siccing her "followers" on you. She should not be rehired.
4. HR should get a talking to, but that's it

Nope. HR needs to have a written warning at the very least. The level of competence that is HR needs to be at the very top. Yall been watching The Office for way too long.

Except refer to point 1.
It is not the responsibility of the company to contact you when you don't show up.
That's entirely on the employee.

So a verbal warning about providing bad information is as far as it should go.

I agree it isn't my responsibility, but I mostly do it to try to be a good Senior Manager. But apparently on the DM, the family member did say they contacted me. When I told them no one contacted me, they then said someone did contact the firm. Now who they contacted, or what the name was they told, or if they told the right people/department, or they're just making shit up is really a mystery to me. They're not giving me anymore updates and at this point it's all hearsay.

There's no "definitive" proof she did it, but I'm pretty damn sure she did. I really hope she doesn't get rehired (from the looks of it, i don't think she would want to either) because it will be awkward as fuck having her in the office.

That should be the case if HR didn't mess up the contract information. They did so. There needs to be a warning.

Yes. A verbal warning. Because while they did mess up in regards to providing information, it ultimately was a minor slip.

Had they messed up the information while the employee was injured/needed family, it would garner a harsher response.

Given the circumstances? No.
