Why do people do this? They have the sherpa literally carry all their possesions and lay all the rope out and in some cases literally drag their sorry asses up this mountain so they can all wait in a traffic jam of a line to spend 5 minutes on the top with 50 other people?

lmao then they die on the way down cause they lose their motivation and shouldnt have even been able to get there without the sherpas anyway

There's a thousand other mountains, some more dangerous than Everest, why not go climb those instead? I know the mobile reception might not be as good as Everest's, but hey, no one cares about your duckface selfies anyway.

I read that and just can't stop thinking how stupid all these people are. Both the climbers and the authorities for handing out that many permits.

You couldn't pay me $11,000 to do it. Mountain climbing has always struck me as a particularly crazy hobby. If you want to test your physical limits run a marathon or something.

They say a lot of adrenaline junkies have some kind of imbalance--they can only feel accomplished if they're literally at risk of dying while they test themselves.

Mountain/cliff climbing and that insanity where people dive without an air tank to see how deep they can go and come back up before drowning.
Just why?

Seems like all of them are just asking for something bad to happen.

Thinking about it some more, free climbing and stuff is probably mostly about adrenaline but I think for most people that climb Everest they just do it so they can say they climbed Everest. Pure ego basically.

Saying you climbed a random mountain, despite it being more dangerous than Everest gets you nothing

For everyone marveling at the traffic jam, the reason it exists is because the "seasonal" window for making the climb is very short this year, so all the intended climbers are getting their climb in at once, more or less.

Darwinism will catch up to these people eventually, and for every one of them that lives atleast 10 others either got seriously hurt or died attempting that shit. Some of them might just be thrill seekers, or people with nothing to live for.

I don't care for anyone who climbs mount everest. They put ladders and literally carry you to the top if needed with enough money. Most people who climb it just do it for the claim, but it's a weak claim when you realize they try to make it as easy as possible. Might as well just say you climbed everest using a gondola or an escalator or an elevator to the top. It's ridiculous.

Look at this baby shit. Oh look convenient way to cross this gap. WHY NOT USE ACTUAL MOUNTAIN CLIMBING TO GET OVER IT. Put some actual difficulty in it.

Those people ethat climb everest no oxygen, mad respect. The people who speed run everest, mad respect. The people that get carried on a sherpa's back no respect. Carry your own god damn gear to the top. Climb mount everest when it isn't in ideal conditions, that's respect. None of this easy mode stuff just so you can climb the highest mountain in the world and say you did it.

Climbed up to camp 3, 7500m but the jet stream had returned closing the summit after only 2 days so I descended to basecamp. Around 100 climbers did summit in those 2 days with sadly 2 deaths, an Indian man found dead in his tent at camp 4 and an Irish climber lost, assumed fallen, on his descent. A go fund me page has been set up for a rescue bid for the Irish climber but it is a well meaning but futile gesture. Condolences to both their friends and families. Both deaths happened above 8000m in the so called death zone where the majority of deaths of foreign climbers happen. Around 700 more people will be looking to summit from Tuesday the 21st onwards. My revised plan, subject to weather that at the moment looks promising, is to return up the mountain leaving basecamp Tuesday the 21st 0230 and, all being well and a lot of luck, arriving on the summit the morning of Saturday the 25th. I will be climbing with my Sherpa, Jangbu who is third on the all time list with an incredible 19 summits. The other 4 members of our team decided to remain on the mountain and are looking to summit on the 21st. My cough had started to return at altitude so I couldnt wait with them at altitude for the window to open without the risk of physically deteriorating too much. Furthermore as I had missed due to sickness the earlier camp 3 rotation best practice was for me to descend to allow my body to recover from the new altitude high so I could come back stronger. This was not an easy decision as the 13 hours climbing from basecamp to camp 2 in a day was the hardest physical and mental challenge I had ever done, now I have it all to do again. Finally I am hopeful to avoid the crowds on summit day and it seems like a number of teams are pushing to summit on the 21st. With a single route to the summit delays caused by overcrowding could prove fatal so I am hopeful my decision to go for the 25th will mean fewer people. Unless of course everyone else plays the same waiting game. #everest #everest2019 #lhotseface
