They need the hashtag so if they want to comment on something, no matter how mundane, it will have traction and other people also wanting to engage in said thing will know where to find such things. For the common twit, the hashtag is as essential to the use of the platform as topic titles are to a message board. Without them, people wont know how to access specific topics. Now keep in mind that the average twit isnt interested in anything other than their own exposure, and any hashtag is going to result in countless twits spouting off their thoughts trying to be heard and look clever, without any particular interest in reading other peoples thoughts or opinions except in so far as a means to provide them an opportunity to make themselves look even more clever. You see, the twit is ultimately a vain and self-centered creature. The entire process has the sole end goal of increasing their likes and followers.
