I've been looking at the ratings on Grouvee, and the only one that has a REMARKABLE decline is MMX7. I am very excited to see why.

Yeah, the NES ones are pretty formulaic. MM7 and MM8 are a little different because they aren't NES games, but your mileage may vary on those.

I mean sliding is a pretty big game changer in MM3 but otherwise they'll pretty much the same. Need to get to those X games asap though.

I think I might like 2 slightly more than 3. The slide and Rush mechanics make the gameplay better, but the power ups were more fun/logical/differentiated in 2.

3 was a rush job (no pun intended) and it shows. I don't know why people rate it so highly. It has some of the worse designed weapons and levels out of the NES games

fun fact, hitting him with any other weapon not only doesn't damage him, it will actually fully refill his health

same thing happens if you hit Heat Man with a Crash Bomb, for some reason

So surprise here, but 2 > 3 > 1

The final boss in 3 was pretty lame. But I REALLY enjoy Proto Man, his theme, and that ending. Did not expect this in an NES title!

They started using a new memory expansion chip is what happened. MM3 used the new one too, but that game had extremely rushed development so they probably didn't get to utilize it the way they wanted to, and it may have been a late addition to the game in the first place.

It could also explain the music quality of 4 as well. I'm only a few stages in, but this is definitely the best OST so far.

If you look at the release dates, the later MM games where some of the last NES games. Mega Man 4 came out in 1991, after the SNES. That's the main reason the later MM games look so good for NES games.

Right now I'm definitely doing 1-6. If I'm not burnt out then I might keep going with the mainline series, then maybe MMX.

Are the MMX games longer? That's definitely a factor

I had a whim to play MMX4 yesterday and I beat the file 100% in about 3 hours so no not really. They might take longer if you're not very good but that's about it.

They have cutscenes, but if you're expecting something like FF or MGS, MMX ain't that.

Eh the cutscenes don't start until MMX4 and there's only like 3 or 4 really. It's definitely not obtrusive in most of the games

That said the later X games are way worse than the later Classic games.

Nah, music hardware only changed for a few dozen games using advanced chips, and even then only in Japanese releases. (If you're curious, that list is here https://wiki.nesdev.com/w/index.php/List_of_games_with_expansion_audio )
People just learned how to better utilize the sound chip over the course of time.

Liking MM4's soundtrack over 2 and 3 is unexpected! I don't dislike any of these soundtracks but out of the NES 6 it's in my bottom half.

Is it weird that I think everything was bigger and better in MM4--the enemies, the music, the backgrounds, the cutscenes--but I like MM2 and MM3 better?

2 > 3 >> 4 >> 1 so far

All are good though!
