If you say anything else besides "saw a board in half" it instantly makes a lot more sense.

The problem obviously wants you to use the logic that it takes you x minutes to do something, so it will take you 3x minutes minutes to do that thing 3 times.

But the problem is cutting a board into two pieces is one action on its own. It's just a bad question.

The teacher didnt think in cuts.
His logic was that it takes 10 minutes to get two pieces.
Thereby it takes 20 minutes to get four pieces.
And thereby it takes on average 5 minutes per piece, so 3 pieces must take 15 minutes.

Well...
If one would first cut half the board, then cut at a 60 debree angle to the left and then another 60 degree angle to the right, then you should get 3 pieces at around ~18 minutes, I am too lazy to calculate the correct time right now.

This is exactly why word problems are stupid.

They don't take place in the real world(Ten minuted to cut a fucking board in half? Are you using a knife?!), and the wording is often open to interpretation (i.e the less logical explanation is the "right" one)

Why do we even have those still? Talk about a waste of time.

Word problems are the most useful problems. You don't just have equations laid out for you irl. You need to interpret s problem, and figure out your own calculations.

No, the problem here is too vaguely phrased

"It took Marie 10 minutes to saw a board into two pieces" implies she cut the board in half, thus if she does it again to another board it would take her 20 minutes if she cut it into thirds

but apparently the "correct" reading is that she cut two pieces off a board that took 5 minutes each, hence cutting one more would make it 15

Word problems and Real World Applications are necessary to learn mathematics. Most kids don't think abstractly enough to think of math in a vacuum.

This is just a poor example.

Yes, this is poorly worded. But in the real world, things are worded even worse, and sometimes you are outright lied to. If this exam was for learning proportions or multiplication, the student should've asked for clarification.

People need to learn to interpret and even learn to clarify. So many people criticize school for not being applicable to the real world, and it's because people don't know how to apply.

you can't really "solve" a problem if it's a lie

that's like:

"What's 2 plus 2?"

"4"

"WRONG! One of those 2s was actually a 3!"

I get why both 15 and 20 minutes are correct answers but I do not agree with how the teacher "corrected" it at all. They just wrote additional information but didn't actually show how to solve the problem.

Then again I just finished a Stats class where "Showing my work" was literally writing down the steps that I followed to plug the information into a website to get the answer, and even that I didn't do consistently and I still got high scores on all the tests.

Also come to think of it my final there was janky. Like it wrote a paragraph long explanation about the mean and standard deviation for the travel time of a bus route and then the correct answer wasn't even correct since they talk about the "scheduled" time instead of the "mean" time it takes for the bus to arrive :\
