I don't really know much about it. Do the programs they use still require them to even have good drawing skills, or like any associative skills that would come from drawing? Or does drawing ability not mean anything at all because the tools are so good?

Its a 3D model with pivot points. Drawing textures is the easy part. Making the framework is the hard part

Well the initial look and texturing would take some artistic input. The actual animation is just telling the 3D model what to do

Substance painter is so good for textures even amateurs can make some beautiful work out of it.

But Drogon is a 3D model, probably built in Zbrush, rigged and animated in Maya, textured in substance,lit and comped in katana and nuke, which are all industry standards.

Knowing how to draw is a good skill to learn for anatomy and movement, but it's not necessary.
