Nah, I think there was some malicious intent there. Trying to make yourself look superior to him. Atleast that's what it's coming across as from how you said it. You maybe just worded it in the wrong way, idk.

I have friends who gamble. It's hard for me to keep my mouth shut watching them lose so much money every month knowing what I know about statistics and probabilities and all that. But I do.

Like, yeah, if you've got a friend that spends a good chunk of his income on gambling then yeah it might be time to say something. But if TC's friend is spending like ten bucks tops on lottery tickets a month, that's not bad.

So, alcohol is an idiot tax too, right? I mean, you don't get anything but liver/brain damage, so anyone who drinks must be an idiot, according to TCs logic.

(FTR, I don't play the lottery OR drink.)

Or, you know, the way your friend feels when they buy their ticket and imagine winning could actually be worth the couple of dollars it costs them. Like, the "high" of dreaming that big doesn't cause any physical damage, the way alcohol does, yet nobody calls alcohol an idiot tax, despite the fact that it makes a LOT of people act like actual idiots...

It sounds like TC should mind his own business and stop telling people how to live their lives. (I know, ironic statements are ironic, but then, I'm not calling anyone an idiot for doing things I wouldn't do, so...)

Good luck making everyone live the way you want them to, TC.

I'm out.

you're actually trading for an actual product when you buy alcohol. and while alcohol is heavily taxed it's not purely going to your state government.

You can think drinking is stupid if you want to. but you are actually receiving something when you buy alcohol unlike when you buy a lotto ticket where you're buying...............telling everyone what you'd buy if you ever won the lottery that you're never going to win? I've got some good news, you can do that for free

People win. It's not a hard concept to understand. Do most lose? Yes. That doesnt stop the former statement from being true.

I know. It just makes it more worth it to try because the payoff is higher. Spending $2 once or twice a year for the possibility of never needing to work again seems like a no brainer

No shit, but a man can dream

I'm the same as Solid Snake. In Australia the jackpots only get to like $90mil every few months. I'll usually start buying a $20 ticket at $50mil +.

I know I'm more likely to get struck by lightning and live, but still. A man can dream.

what if he wins tho

His winnings will be a shadow of what the lottery makes from selling tickets. Everyone he knows will approach with palms held out, followed by predatory legal experts and charities. It counts as earned income, driving him into a higher tax bracket. He'll need to start making money immediately or bleed chunks of it over time.

I was a clerk for a number of years at a gas station and I can say first hand playing scratch offs and daily pick whatevers is a losing endeavor. The one time a lotto regular came out ahead winning $100k on a scratch off, he blew it all and was back to broke within a year.

I tell my mom the same thing, but also in terms of what could have been done with that money spent. Could have gone to MULTIPLE relaxing vacations (if you make smart purchases) or other things to make life better.

She says it's her way of hoping for a better future, but there are much better ways to elevate one's wealth...
