There would be a lot of mixing of us and them, lots of racism/speciesism, and plenty of people who would make them a huge political talking point.

Stuff like this is why I like RPG games where you get to choose your race. Because the difference between races in games like that is more like different species co-existing (or not) together, similar to humans and neanderthals.
