That is, the "guy" is canon. Obviously Lovecraftian Garfield is not canon. Anyway, waaaaay back in the begining of the the Garfield strip, Jon had a roommate. This roommate was Odie's original owner and was the only other human character in the strip. Jim Davis, the creator, eventually dropped him from the strip when Garfield The Cat more or less replaced him as Jon's talking buddy. Lyman (the roommate) was only in around 70 strips total. There were a number of running gags as to what happened to Lyman, but Jim Davis never canonically confirmed what happened to him in the strips. https://garfield.fandom.com/wiki/Lyman Anyway, it appears that in this horrorcraft universe, Lyman was tormented by visions of what Garfield would become and was locked in an asylum. EDIT: Its worth noting that Garfield was, more or less, a normal cat when the strip started.
