Chris Rock and Lionsgate are collaborating on a Saw spinoff.

Ive been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004, Rock said. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.

The franchise revolves around the fictional character John Kramer, also called the Jigsaw Killer or Jigsaw, who traps victims in situations that test their will to live. Tobin Bell has portrayed Jigsaw in all eight films. The low-cost titles have been highly profitable for Lionsgate, grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide. Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Gregg Hoffman produced all the Saw movies.

Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgates Motion Picture Group, made the announcement on Thursday. The new movie will be released on Oct. 23, 2020.

When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in, said Drake. Saw is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all time and its one of Lionsgates most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.

Horror worked for Jordan Peele so this should be another pleasant surprise...right?

Nothing past 2 should have happened. Especially when Dr. Gordon disappeared for 10 movies and suddenly hey guys I'm okay!

I hope they go back to the traps being designed to help redeem people instead of the "you're going to die horribly no matter what you do" traps from the later movies.

Yeah it's why pretty much all of them but the original and partially the 2nd were utter trash. Rock wants to add different spins to the whole trap angle so that's kind of interesting.

Didn't they just do another sequel to those like less than a year ago?

It must be hard coming up with new things now without always doing a reboot.

In-universe there's a reason for this specifically but yeah...this would be nice.

If you look into the intricate and ever expanding lore of Saw theres a reason why this happens

I mean, I get that there's a story reason. I just found the traps more interesting when there was a chance of escape. When you know they're going to die no matter what, there attempts at solving the puzzle / escaping just becomes torture porn and it's just less interesting.

yeah the last movie was in 2017

i'll probably watch this new one if they go back to the taps or whatever being ironic twists of the victims personality/traits, or invent some interesting new twist over just "haha yur trapped, now bleed or yur ded"

While there was a good narrative reason for the change, I agree with this post.
