So, I know many restaurants send out coupons and stuff in the mail to drum up customers. But recently, I noticed something about one restaurant.

Its sent me stuff at least twice. And its usually before certain days. The first was a little before Valentines Day. And the other one I got today (not too long be free Fathers Day. Both times, I got two coupons. 25% of on you entire check and $10 off two adult entrees (has to be at least $30, I think. Or that might be the price of two adult entrees.)

But both times, it said not valid on those holidays(Valentines and Fathers Day respectively). Do a lot of restaurants do that? But that, I mean send out coupons right before certain holidays, but also telling you to not use them on those holidays. I thought they normally send you coupons specially made for those days...

This place seems to be doing well. So, I don't think that's it. It just seems weird to send the coupons before holidays where you know you'll have people, but then say those coupons won't work that day...

mainly because they'll not see that stipulation, go there with the coupon, and when they get and eat their food, they'll be told they can't use the coupon, and pay full price because you typically pay at the end of the meal.

it's incredibly sleazy.

Yeah that'd be my guess tbh.

Especially since people would be super hyped, unless they're cautious people or happened to notice it'd be easy to get them that way.

Still seems weird since if a place is doing good you'd think they'd be packed on days like that without needing to do such a thing. Seems like a lack of confidence or sign of weakness or something kinda to me. Like do they not think they'll hold up to other places on those holidays that people love to take someone out to eat or what?

We don't tend to get coupons for places we'd go for something like that, I think the only coupons we get are for fast food places even. x3

No specials on what are typically busy days.

Specials are for days people don't usually come in.

Either they're being sleazy as has been suggested, or perhaps they're encouraging you to celebrate on a day adjacent to the holiday/special day in question. That would spread out the business they would normally receive in one day over two or three days, easing the load on the employees and supplies.

That actually sounds somewhat reasonable. I hope ita that, tbh...

Most people wont use those coupons at all, but those direct mailers act as basically a reminder that the restaurant exists

They send them out before Valentines Day and Fathers Day/Graduation because both of those are really profitable for restaurants

Why would I want to celebrate Valentine's Day at Burger King?

Used to own a restaurant.. This is common because on the holidays like Valentines day, mothers day etc the restaurants are going to be busy without any coupons.. Many restaurants even increase prices or have pricier set menus on big holidays. The coupons are for days that are normally not busy and are used to bring in customers on the slower days.

The Pizzeria Uno near me sent out on several occasions a mailer that was basically 2 $10 gift cards to use on separate specific date ranges. I guess it didn't drum up enough business, though, because they wound up closing without warning literally the same week Blaze opened.

it means they will already have a good amount of business on those days. they're trying to balance things out and have more business on regular days. letting you use the coupon on the holiday would just make the holiday even more busy, which is not efficient (diminishing returns etc.). you don't want a couple intensely busy days and the rest mediocre, you want medium/medium-high business every day.

Well, more like a steakhouse. At least in my case... So, it does make sense...

Right. But thats why its weird. Why not send those out on random days not as close to the holidays? Why send right before holidays instead of randomly around times when there are no holidays?

While I admit I see them for fast food places more, I still see them for many other places as well. It could just be the area...

I forgot about those booklet ones with the really shitty coupons. Also I just got one for one that's been here awhile today for the direct stuff. It had a stipulation about not being able to use it on free pie day. Also I guess pizza places also count since pizza isn't fast food.

the holiday draws business. the trick is to spread that business around, and not cram it all into a single day. the coupon reminds you of the holiday, which reminds you to go out for dinner, but if you go on the busy day itself you effectively pay a premium rate, and if you go on a different day, you get a discount to encourage the business to spread out, which is better for the company.

Yeah. That's why I was saying why not send them out during random days not close to the holiday to drum up business around the less crowded days... They can always send out fliers around the holiday to remind people...

can you conclusively say that they don't? they probably do, and you saying "well I've never noticed" doesn't really confirm it. I've actually never seen holiday related restaurant coupons like you describe, though I've seen lots that have nothing to do with holidays. but otherwise, for the coupons you're asking about, it's the holiday that's the draw, and the coupon maximizes the effect of the holiday.

True. Ive never seen them. Though, I would think it weird that everyone received the holiday coupons. And few received the year round flyer, if any...

One reason is that many will not go out around a holiday as they are waiting to go on the day of to celebrate. The coupon encourages people who normally wouldn't be out on those days to come. While not the case for all places, at our restaurant it was typically slower on the days surrounding the holidays than random days throughout the year.
