man I wish I were better at playing vidya, I try to go back and play all these classics but I usually end up staring at a list of games for 10 minutes and then just play something like windjammers or neo turf masters until my gf gets home lol

Nah. Coral Capers is a classic. Spyro water levels were good because you could actually dash underwater. 20,000 Lums Under the Sea is just a beautiful collection of water type levels

Water levels never bothered me much, except in Zelda games. But that could have more to do with them being Zelda games tbh.

hardest level in that game

Not by a long shot. The last two levels were way harder. You habe to fight the Technodrome, then deal with those stupid jetpack soldiers inside it. Ugh.

The dam level was really pretty easy, and not even by comparison. I wonder if most players literally just didn't know they could switch turtles.

Earthworm Jim

The "down the tubes" level where you're navigating underwater in that wonky submarine while a timer is counting down to your death.

To this day, hardest water level I've ever played.

The only annoying thing about the Water Temple was the process of switching metal boots on and off.

Half-Life gave me severe video game hydrophobia though. Fucking Ichthyosaurs.

When I replayed it as a teenager I discovered you could shoot the water monsters above surface...And that they weren't actually a big threat even if you fell in. But when I was a kid I legit turned the game off after I fell in the water the first time lol

Genuinely this. Currently playing AC Odyssey and I'm not even going to touch the underwater ruins. Any mission that forces me down there takes so much longer because I refuse to enter the water until I'm satisfied that I've sniped every single shark and Ikaros has done a comprehensive sweep to ensure such. Shadow of the Tomb Raider has been mentioned in this topic already; any time I encountered an aquatic challenge tomb or section of the story I looked it up on YouTube first until I was satisfied with how to get through. To be fair it's less about the water and more about the horrendous things that live in it, but still.

And yet I hear about games designed specifically around that concept. There's a multiplayer game I've seen on Steam where one team are divers (in first person, I think) and the other are different kinds of sharks. Absolutely fuck that.

IMO, DKC water levels honestly aren't good so much as they're not bad.

And as someone currently playing the Spyro series, I'm a bit baffled that you think they're good. You mentioned you could dash underwater, but that severely fucks the camera up. So you basically get to choose whether you want to paddle around extremely slowly or go quickly without seeing where the hell you're going.

The camera is kinda shaky the second you dive in and hit the floor, but I thought everything else was perfect. I like how you can hold a button to move instead of constantly pressing it
