I've beaten some hard-ass NES games like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games, the Ninja Gaiden games, Batman, the original CastleVania, the first two Double Dragon games, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, and Friday the 13th. The one game I gave up on was Battletoads. I made it to Volkmire's Inferno before I tapped out.

I have two NES systems. Both of which have damaged pin connectors. I tried cleaning/readjusting them, but it didn't work. Instead, I bought a knockoff NES (which is legal since Nintendo's patent expired). It works fine on most games, but Battletoads freezes as soon as the second level begins.

Is it worth buying an original NES system to go back and challenge Battletoads again or should I just accept that that's the one game that beat me? I know I could buy a new pin connector set, but those are unreliable or so I've read. And the instillation is... well, I'd just rather open up my wallet than do the handy work.

The teaser clip made a not-so-subtle nod to the original NES title's notoriously difficult vehicle segment

Okay, I know this is a reference to the speeder bikes, but there are at least three sections of the game this could apply to.

Why not just replace the 72 pin connector? It's a lot cheaper than buying another one and there's no soldering required. Won't take long at all either.

If you are really that on getting a copy maybe just check around for something cheaper.

The other two aren't notorious because most people never got to them.

The only way to beat or win at Battletoads is to not play.

Honestly, no. The only reason anyone should play the game is through Rare Replay. You get a bunch of other games to play along with Battletoads (including a much more fun Arcade Battletoads), and you have th ability to cheese through Battletoad's BS.

I always assume these folks, for some reason, won't break the law for any reason at all.

Random to bring this up in a battle toads topic but I've always found it interesting the difference between people who won't do things because of the law and then people like me who won't do things because they don't think it harms anyone if they aren't caught

Technically he will not be breaking the law since he said he has two copies of the game.

The speeder bike level really wasn't bad at all tbh. It was the level after that that I never beat.

Also Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wasn't that bad either. It took maybe a week or two to get enough practice.

Double Dragon, though. You can learn to get through the first three levels consistently but that fourth level is hell. Absolute hell.

The first time you beat Battletoads, it should be with the Game Genie Infinite Lives code tbh.

Battletoads is a tough series to recommend, as it really only appeals to a certain kind of masochistic gamer.

Personally, I find the SNES entry (Battletoads in Battlemaniacs) to be much more replayable. It's a lot shorter, a bit easier, and still hits all the major highlights from the original. I haven't gone back to the NES version in years. If you don't get your fill from Battlemaniacs, then the NES game is great. It's got a ton more variation.

If it were me... I'd learn how to install a new pin connector. It's one of the easiest repairs you can do on a retro console and if you enjoy retro gaming, you should bite the bullet and learn some basic maintenance like replacing cartridge batteries and all that, imho. It's a lot less work than memorizing the wall placement in the damn Turbo Tunnel.
