Teenagers who flicked cheese at a severely allergic schoolboy who later died had no intention to harm him, a coroner has found.

Karanbir Cheema, known as Karan, went from feeling "absolutely fine" to falling unconscious in less than ten minutes after the dairy product was put down his collar at William Perkin Church of England High School in Greenford, west London, on 28 June 2017.

The 13-year-old had severe allergies to wheat, gluten, dairy products and nuts, yet was well enough after the incident to "calmly" walk to the welfare office at his school and talk to teacher Lucjan Santos.
ust moments later he was "leaning over the sink, gasping for air, still scratching his neck" school administrator Bonny Campbell told the inquest at St Pancras Coroner's Court on May 1.

As he lurched around the room and attempted to rip his shirt off, a paramedic was called who treated him at the scene before rushing him to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Having been placed into an induced coma, Karan died ten days later when his parents made the decision to withdraw the drugs keeping him alive. Today senior coroner Mary Hassell recorded a narrative conclusion into his death and said the main factor was his severe allergy.

Ms Hassell added the pupil who flicked the cheese did not mean any harm and "all of the evidence point to the cheese being responsible for Karanbir's death".

She described the cheese throwing as a "childish and thoughtless act" before calling on schools to better educate pupils to the dangers of allergies and for care plans for children with allergies to be beefed up.

The teenager who threw the cheese which landed on Karanbir's neck has told the inquest from behind a screen he was only "playing around" and thought he was allergic only to bread.

He apologised to his parents after giving evidence and said: "I didnt mean any harm - Im sorry , Im sorry for what I did." The boy who handed the cheese over claimed although he knew Karan had a dairy allergy, he did not know cheese was dairy.

He said he and Karan were acquaintances on "neutral" terms. He told the inquest: " knew he was allergic to some things, dairy and pollen.

Last Friday Dr Adam Fox, paediatric allergy consultant at Evelina London Children's Hospital, told the inquest how he could find no previous case where a skin reaction to a dairy product had cause death.

He said: "Where this case is extraordinarily unusual is the nature of the event that led to the anaphylaxis.

"Because severe allergic reactions through skin contact are very very uncommon indeed, and if it was skin contact alone that caused, in this case fatal, anaphylaxis, I believe that to be unprecedented.

"I have been unable to find any case reports. I've canvassed widely around this and I'm not aware of any fatal cases."

He told St Pancras Coroner's Court there were cases of other children having severe reactions through skin contact, but none of them died. Karan was more likely to have a severe reaction because he was male, of Asian origin, a teenager, and had hay fever .

Alexandra Ulrich, of the London Ambulance Service (LAS), told the inquest Karan's symptoms appeared to be more consistent with a severe asthma attack and she could see no rash, hives or swelling.

The paramedic, who has more than 10 years' experience, gave him two grams of magnesium sulfate.

The medicine is used to treat muscle spasms during life-threatening asthma attacks and is not meant for under-18s.

"If I had known about the specific details of the history about the allergens, I wouldn't have given it," she said.

Ms Hassell said: "It just sounds like you were missing that few seconds to step back and say 'What do we have here?"' She said Ms Ulrich's overall response sounded "a little bit panicked", asking her: "Do you think you were influenced by the panic around you?"

Ms Ulrich, who did not discover the teenager's allergy history until arriving at hospital, replied: "Probably."

She added: "When we arrive, people look to us for answers and to fix things.

"A child has deteriorated quickly and we have a short window of opportunity to try and reverse that. I think I was in the mindset we only had seconds or minutes.

"I think I was probably keen to deliver that care and maximise that window of opportunity."
He was placed into an induced coma but as the days progressed it was realised "had no chance of survival"

Giving her conclusion, Ms Hassell said: "In terms of involvement, I don't think (the pupil who gave the cheese) had anything to with anything.

"He was eating his cheese baguette and a pupil asked him for some and he went on his way - he simply had no involvement.

"In relation to (the pupil who threw the cheese) I don't think that he thought 'Karanbir's got an allergy, I'm going to hurt him', I don't think he thought anything.

"This was a thoughtless act, he simply wasn't thinking."

He added: "Whether the cheese went down Kararbir's throat, it seems to me that the evidence points toward the cheese going down his neck, not his throat.

"He suffered an extraordinary reaction... and it must be difficult to believe because it was so severe.

"All of the evidence point to the cheese being responsible for Karanbir's death."

Yeah he sounds dumb as hell tbqh

But the story does make a point of really hammering home how unprecedented the severity of his reaction was too, so at most he probably thought the kid would get a rash or something

I don't get this. If he knew that the boy was allergic to cheese and he still threw cheese (of all things) at him, how can they conclude he had no intention to harm him?

He wanted to bully the kid but didn't want him to die.

That's what they mean by "harm"

Like how pulling off a girl's clothes when she's on stage in front of the entire school and their parents doesn't physically "harm" her.

Bullies wanted to humiliate their victim to gain social points with their clique

I don't think kids expect an allergic reaction to cause anything more that "mild discomfort" and hardly gleefully hoping it kills someone in a supposedly unprecedented manner. Sure it was stupid, but kids are stupid.

Awful he died though regardless.

bully did it for clout. we all know how a bully need the command power over others. this bully just trying to avoid 1/3 of the bullying he did to the other kid cause people dont like bullying. so this bully will be bullied by other bigger, badder bullies. we know it takes a monster to deal with a monster.

so thats why kids who bully reveal themselves and publically apologize. these bullies are told what to say to avoid further escalation. its not done for these bullies, not by a long shot. mainly grown ups think an apology excuses bullying someone to death. nope...

Not sure how being British makes me biased at all though. The child is an utter moron and was without doubt a nasty bully from the sounds of it, but children are idiots is all my point and as someone else said, kids routinely rarely believe their peers issues are "severe" as they are told or that they will do any serious harm.

The child can still be an arsehole of a bully and not intended to kill Karan.
