I think I liked it pretty early on. It was the story that made me not finish first time around.

I couldnt get into vanilla FF12 back in 2006. The Zodiac Age was fun though. Glad I gave it another shot when it released on PS4. Though I got a platinum trophy for it, so I am not tempted to play it again any time soon.

It's not that the game is boring, it's that it can be tedious. Which is precisely why the fast mode is so useful. It cuts out the BS

I just impulse bought Zodiac Age for Switch this morning. I've always been interested but never been able to get far in vanilla XII. I like the basics, except after a point it's just running around while your party auto-kills everything which just feels pointless. Hopefully I can get more into it this time around.

You have a set of rules you can use to program your characters so they can act and react in certain situations, or you can individually control one of the 3 characters in your party.

This is nothing special to FF12. Lots of re-releases and ports do this. Pokemon Stadium did this.

I for one love the idea of a fast forward. When you are grinding chain combos to get certain items and just leveling in general it takes a ton of the tedium away.

and while i'm sure there is a set up, good luck figuring one out early game that works in all scenarios. especially since you have to find/buy etc. certain gambits.

I mostly used gambits farming drops and such. Equip the no exp accessory and no worries about over leveling (an option every game needs).

It basically plays itself

That doesn't sound like a good thing

It actually gives you the freedom to play however you want. Want to control the party in a semi-turn based manner? You can. Want to manually control one character while having the other's act as AI companions? You can. Want to automate stuff like curing status and stealing and manually do everything else? You can. Want to automate everything and only control it when you need a change of plan? You can do that too. It's really a fantastic game and has a ton of content.

yeah I basically just automated physical attacks and curing. did everything else manually. think the only other thing I did was put my ranged attackers on priority for killing flying enemies.

just know you'll have to be on your toes constantly in combat. i'm sure some can handle it but manually controlling everyone was a pain in the ass for me.

seriously don't like the "it plays itself" type of comments because a lot of times i've put the game on 4x speed and ended up having my whole party wiped before I could back down the speed and figure out why I was getting stomped.

I feel the 4x speed was more for farming and grinding, maybe even getting around towns faster whereas 2x was for everything else.

I was grinding. but basically felt confident in my teams ability to beat a enemy or mob, and nope not this time even if I had literally just beat a mob just like it. the main healer goes down everybody gets fucked lol. I usually have a main healer and another person who healing isn't quite as a priority to them. like they wait till hp drops beyond a lower point.

point being though if the game played its self, even on 4x speed I should be able to just sit back and let the AI do its thing

I was doing that in the Henne Mines, where those high level bats are, went to get something to drink and my party was dead so I know the feeling.

yeah can't remember what game broke me of it, but no matter how safe I feel in a game I pause if I walk away. literally just the other day was playing marvel ultimate alliance 2, and was 99.9 percent sure there was no more enemies coming until I went through this door. still paused when I went to use the bathroom.

I figure that's why they were called "gambits" in the first place. I'm placing too much confidence in my own ability to set up things right, and an awful amount of luck into the AI to pull it all off.

Even after setting up your gambits, you can override them at any time during combat.

It's a very flexible battle system that gets a bad rep for unreasonable... reasons.

yeah to be clear you override it with one command after that it goes right back into the gambits. which is nice when most enemies can be dealt with by your gambits but there is the occasional enemy in the area that can one shotted by a particular magic spell, or at least it does way more damage to them than physical attacks.
