They aren't part of the big 4 and there's a lot of debate over whether they count as grunge

Also PJ is definitely the worst of the 4

AiC is the least important of the Big 5. And grunge isnt even a real genre.

AiC was more important than STP. STP were good but they were like the outside the big 4 box band kinda like Exodus being outside the Thrash big 4.

1. Soundgarden - Chris Cornell had the best voice, not just grunge, but in all rock imo. He had tremendous range.

2. Nirvana - Even though I don't personally like them, they made the genre a household name and got the most playtime on MTV and radio over the other bands in the genre.

3. AiC - They had a natural grunge sound produced by Layne Staley's voice. The new incarnation of AiC is nowhere even close to the original sound.

4. Pearl Jam - IMO, the weakest of the big four for good reason. They were grunge up until Ten. After that, I feel that they lost their identity after they put out Vitalogy.

Best thing AiC ever did was their Unplugged IMO, a lot of the depth of the harmonies and interesting modal stuffs got lost in the grunginess on the album versions.

PJ had ten, one great album. Wasn't that big a fan. Nirvana can be king since it started that whole grunge trend. AiC is great as well, great singer. Soundgarden can be third.

STP wasn't considered grunge at the time, I always find their stuff in the alternative rock sections. Corre was definitely a stab at grunge, but purple was just awesome album all around I played the hell out of the cassette back in the day.

1. Agreed, on a technical level Cornell is almost unarguably one of the greatest singers ever, deserves way more credit.

2. I'd argue that while Nirvana may have popularized it, the genre would just straight up not exist if not for Cornell. Not only for Soundgarden, but Pearl Jam came together because of him, and he had huge influence on the rest of not only the Grunge genre, but rock as a whole.

3. Agreed, but honestly, new AiC honestly isn't bad, even if it is very different.

4. Ten, Vs., and Vitalogy all are indisputably grunge, and while they start to stray from it a bit later, it's undeniably still a huge part of their sound in Yield, No Code, Riot Act, etc. It's only really Backspacer and Lightning Bolt that just straight up ditches their grunge routes.

Ten, Vs. and Vitalogy are all amazing albums. None of the rest after quite get as amazing as those 3 admittedly, but there's still some masterpieces scattered on the rest of them, especially Yield and Riot Act. No Code's got some gems too.

I'd also argue that just because Nirvana popularized grunge, doesn't make them the best grunge band. Avatar (was) the highest grossing film of all time, but no one says it's a better movie than say, Schindler's List or Citizen Kane.

Grunge fans are what killed Grunge tbh. By limiting it to "Oh, they have to be from Seattle, they have to have ____, and ____, and ____", and then ruling out other bands like Bush, Seven Mary Three, Candlebox, etc. for various inane reasons, they ensured that the genre couldn't grow. That applies heavily to STP as well; no one argues that musically they're in the same ballpark as the big 4, but because they're Cali, they get written off.

I dont think grunge as a genre ever really existed except in the minds of record labels trying to cash in on the success of Nevermind by dressing up bands with a remotely similar sound in flannel shirts, much like The Libertines were fuck all like The Strokes but the A&R decided to put them in leather jackets to jump on that whole fad.

Nirvana really belonged to of a group of bands that grew from the hardcore scene of the 80s and worshipped Black Flags My War, spearheaded by bands like Melvins, whereas Eddie Vedder couldnt even spell Fugazi.

Montley crue? My God that's some bad stuff. Def leappard imo was the best hair band of the 80s, don't know dokken but I know of W.A.S.P and yeah, they're great as well. Replace crue with whitesnake or great white and we'll be ok...

Audioslave fucks with me because I listened to the CD on a car trip, in the back seat, back from Virginia Tech at like 2 am and I was not right, I swear to this day they had Like a Stone on repeat because I swear the song never stopped. So towards the end of the song when they go into that crazy whatever solo with that sound, it just takes me back to my head spinning.

Audioslave, if they had longevity would be easily #1 for me but no way in hell would I replace Soundgarden or Rage with just audioslave.

First time I fully listened to that album (I loved I Am the Highway and Like A Stone but hadn't really listened to the rest) was on an acid trip (first time as well). Think I listened to that album like a half dozen times that night. Was completely entranced by it. Those 2 songs plus Shadow of the Sun are IMO the best songs Cornell has ever made.
