I wouldnt exactly brag about being unaware of a username you've responded to dozens of times. We've actually had several pretty decent conversations in the past but then you get on your period or something. You might need to look into getting an MRI though if your memory is that awful

Probably for the best. It'll come out eventually like Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 did but until the time it's due out it's a meh from me.

I'm convinced it's going to come out, and be a horrific trainwreck that appeals to no one, because new players won't care, and older players won't get nostalgia out of it because they changed too much.

It's going to be the opposite of the RE2 remake.

That's still the plan. The prevailing theory is that they'll release "Episode 1", and it will be everything up to the point you leave Midgar. Probably with a ton of new crap and extra padding to disguise how badly they're chopping the original game up.

Active rpgs can be good, I just lack faith in them to do this well.

I feel like, if you're giving up on turn-based combat and going active combat, you should stop half-assing it and just go full action RPG. Something more akin to Skyrim than weird hybrids or over-complicated mechanics (KH and FFXV springing to mind).

If by "recent", you mean "ever since the merger with Enix", then I'd agree with you.

And by "merger", I mean "Square's takeover in almost everything but name by Enix, because they stupidly bankrupted the company with Final Fantasy: Spirits Within"

i liked spirits within.

it didn't feel like final fantasy at all, which was weird and off-putting if that's all you're going for, but i liked it for what it was.

That was half the problem - people went in expecting "Final Fantasy", and they didn't really get anything that felt like Final Fantasy at all.

The other problem was the uncanny valley was in full effect, which turned a lot of people off. As did the ambiguous bittersweet ending, which is probably fine for Japanese audiences but which is the sort of thing notorious for making Americans loathe your movie.

I thought the studio had potential, and it's a shame all we got was that and Final Flight of the Osiris, but they basically mortgaged their entire company to throw everything on the roulette wheel, and it came up 00.

you're not wrong, sadly. i love me some ambiguity when it's done right, hate that we typically have to have all our shit spelled out to us letter by letter. didn't even know about the other movie they made, i'll have to check it out at some point.

I prefer it when it's done well and earned, but even then I think it works better when it's character ambiguity rather than plot ambiguity. If you're going to build up a massive story arc and then end it with a shrug, it kind of implies to me that you're just a shitty writer/director.

Ironically, Final Fantasy VII itself had a similar issue, with the only hint that you actually saved the planet rather than theoretically destroying it comes from the after-credits cut-scene, and even that doesn't really explain much other than that the planet itself still exists and Red XIII survived somehow.

I always found it amusing that you could tell the difference between the cutscenes produced entirely by the Japanese development team and the cutscenes that were animated by North Americans, because her boobs would quadruple in size between two scenes.

yeah, that's fair. it's hard to do right. i think it suits itself better to the horror genre than something like this, which is probably why i'm a little less bothered by it. FF7's ending wasn't too bad to me. it was potentially a bit depressing, but the thought of humans getting wiped out (or nearly so) so the world could heal and nature could take over again was neat.

i don't think i ever even noticed this. i only noticed that she bounced a lot sometimes and never bothered thinking about it beyond that. funny as hell tho.
