This. Like I enjoy more than just the gameplay but I wouldn't and won't enjoy it as much with action gameplay.

Looks like its been confirmed its still gonna be multiple parts. Maybe each part will be a disc? I couldnt really imagine it being like 2-3 parts per disc because that would basically kill it

I always assumed part 1 was (greatly expanded) Midgar.

The question is how do you break up the parts. 2 more parts for disc 1 and 2 parts to cover disc 2 + 3, so 5 in all?

If part 1 could go beyond Midgar that'd be nice...

Everyone seems to think that part one will only go through Midgar, and judging by everything we've seen from the trailer that's likely a safe bet. The glaring flaw here is that would mean you only get one encounter with Sephiroth, and also don't get four of your party members at all in the game. I would love it if they could just make it a two-parter, load up content through the end of disc one and then part two picks up from there for discs two and three. Honestly though, I'm expecting a majorly shallow game like FFXV was that'll be beautiful and lack the soul and charm the first game had.

With that said, I can't wait to buy it and fawn over every piece of material released up until it launches. I hope they keep Emerald and Ruby weapon because they nearly made me dookie my jeans when I was seven, and would likely have the same effect these days in the glorious visual fidelity of current hardware.

I wonder how Barret will be handled. Since this is gonna have voice acting they dont have many options with his swearing. Hes either gonna be fully uncensored swearing up a storm or having his swearing neutered some so its acceptable. Cant really see them using censor beeps since that would just be weird.

I just don't get why it can't be updated turn based gameplay. Nobody's asking for ocarina of time to be remade as a fighting game. Nobody wants Mario 64 reimagined as a real time strategy. You can update the gameplay, but this is changing genres - away from the genre they had most success with.

I do like the game, but not nearly as much as a lot of people here since I think its more along the lines of a 7.5-8 instead of greatest of all time.

Maybe they felt an Action RPG approach would make the game more exciting and fit the scenes/tone of the game better than slow turn based combat. I mean what would you have expected for updated turn based combat anyways? X-2 level? They havent really done a real full party control turn based FF in a LONG time so while they could've just done turn based like the old one it apparently isnt really their style these days unless you want to play Dragon Quest

i don't know how to respond to any of the rest of your post if like, you think that everything that can be done with turn based combat has been done. i'm not a game designer so i'm not here to have the ideas. i could understand this if ffvii was like, some cult thing that some nerds really loved but they thought this was the approach to take for a mainstream audience - but ffvii is their highest selling game of all time and one of the best selling games ever. never mind what i would like - i just don't even understand it from a business perspective. action games are such a crowded space and you have the greatest achievement of the genre that your business was based on in an empty jrpg market.

Persona 5 has basically proven that people still like turn-based combat is still fun and interesting

that being said, if they want to fix FFXV's combat for this I wouldn't be against it. but it needs work.

The true best FF game from a gameplay standpoint was X-2. That game really knew how to have fun in more than one way. Pretty telling that it's so generally disliked, since its weakness is in its story and world - the areas FF typically flexes in.

Anyway if you want to know what an evolved turn-based design looks like, it looks like the Bravely games and Octopath Traveler. Stacking new, engaging mid-fight mechanics on top of the tried, true, familiar and nostalgic systems that get used as a base. Persona's "One More!" and SMTs Press Turn are comparable, but those are less recent innovations.

Im not saying everything has been done with turn based combat. I just dont think there is a whole lot they couldve updated the ATB to that they havent already done that people wouldnt have found a way to bitch about for being different.

Also Square hasnt made sense in ages. Were talking about a studio thats been on a downward spiral for most fans for over a decade now with almost all of their best games in the last several years being stuff they published that other studios developed. They clearly struggled after the PS1 era. I mean we still got some good PS2 stuff from them, but then they crashed hard with PS3 development and take way too long to even deliver a single game these days. Theyve been coasting by with mobile games and porting classics over and over again because they clearly are a gigantic mess of a development team. Its a miracle this even looks decent, has a trailer and hasnt been scrapped entirely AGAIN. I mean theres a good reason we all joke this will come out when our grandkids are around. Square is a hot mess and while it might make sense to stay as true to the original as possible to please the fans of their hottest hit they just arent what they used to be and may never recover as a studio.

That all sounds like an incredibly strong argument to just release a cash grab graphical update to me

You can have turn based and still have it look fancy. Like Xenoblade 2 looks like an action RPG, but it really is pretty similar to the ATB system. It's just you can move around and the auto attacks make it look like you're accomplishing something actiony, when really you're still just waiting for your gauge to fill so you can take your real turn.

Yeah, but we arent dealing with the golden studio of the old days anymore sadly. I mean I was talking to Zea about this the other day and he basically said there used to be a time where a new FF game was massive hype like a new Zelda game and these days FF just has no hype and nobody cares about it like they used to.

Hell if they werent even remaking 7 what would we even have to look forward to? It doesnt sound like too many people would even care to see FFXVI from current Square. Hell FF in general died to seemingly a lot of people after either 9 or 10

But it not being the golden studio of the old days is my point - if you have no faith in them, the best thing they can do is just release the game as was but with new graphics!

I don't know why people are opposed to a reimagining of the game. The original will always exist if this isn't what you want it to be. I respect them trying to work the original into something closer to today's tastes.

I mean I dont disagree with your feelings. Im fine whether they want to do it like the original or try something different. I just think current Square isnt even remotely considering that possibility because they seem to be completely out of touch with their fans to the point where doing the obvious is completely foreign to them.

I'm not remotely opposed to the game being reimagined, I just think there's a way for it to be reimagined while still being a turn based RPG. Which would be my preference!

Thinking on it a bit, it's kind of funny how much they've said that this is in development for PS4. Like, we all know PS5 is going to be out by 2021, and even with it being backwards compatible it seems folly to dedicate yourself to a sprawling multi-episode epic when I'd be stunned to see even the first episode released before the PS4 is old hat.
